Panasonic to launch Android smartphone

Friday, December 9, 2005: Panasonic announces its withdrawal from the global market for mobile phones, in favor of the Japanese market only. In case of difficulties in developing devices that fit in Japan as the world. "At the time, we missed the boat partnerships with operators and too privileged direct selling. We left because we were in the red, "suggests Laurent Roussel, CEO of Panasonic France.

Six years later, this Friday, December 9, 2011, the Japanese officially announces his return to the global market for smartphones. Expected in March 2012 in Europe, the return of the electronics giant of a highly competitive segment will be a terminal for hours on behalf unknown and with the technical specifications still unclear.

Android Smartphone reinforced

The limited information disclosed, the device - which the Japanese brand has released some photos - will carry the mobile system from Google, Android, will have an OLED display of 4.3 inches with a definition QHD (960 x 540 points, quarter of Full HD), resist water and dust. These last two features are far from being absurd, since the brand is famous worldwide for its electronics computers reinforced Toughbooks and his fighters cameras ( Lumix DMC-FT3 ).

A fact sheet to follow
Analysis of the first pictures released by Panasonic suggests that the terminal will carry the communication technology of short-range wireless NFC , which allows, among other contactless payment and use of services (tickets, etc.).. The rest of the sheet is still unknown, but it should be noted that the Japanese brand is known for developing the majority of its components in-house.

Back and ambitions
Panasonic does not start to flower gun. The manufacturer has already set in beautiful goals: sell 1.5 million smartphones in Europe in the first year and aims, by 2016, 15 million units worldwide, including 9 million in Europe, Asia , China and the United States and 6 million in Japan (5 million smartphones), dixit the press. "The smartphone market is now large enough to allow us to return," says Laurent Roussel.

Android suffers two setbacks in the war of patents

The operating system Android Google suffers more than ever the legal guerilla led by Microsoft and Apple against him on behalf of the violation of their patents. One after the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) issued two decisions that are unfavorable. The first is the more symbolic because it condemns Taiwanese manufacturer HTC for patent infringement Apple on a soft harmless but is widespread. This can click directly on a phone number contained in an email to initiate a phone call from his smartphone.

The decision will take effect in April 2012 and will prohibit its import HTC Android smartphones shipping this function (ie almost all). It remains to HTC to remove this feature if it wishes to continue selling its phones overseas or modify the implementation of this function. This decision is certainly a victory for Apple, which is at loggerheads with the Taiwanese manufacturer of the U.S. market. With this decision, the manufacturer could lead to apple legal action against other manufacturers of Android smartphones in the U.S..

Adobe also drops the Flash Player to TV

New strategies for Adobe Flash technology does not ultimately affect the mobile platforms but also televisions.

We learned yesterday that the company no longer wished to develop Adobe's Flash Player for mobile operating systems.  The firm will explain further encourage developers to use its tools to embed their applications so they run natively on different OS.  Reading streaming video should then go through the technologies of HTML5.  According to the blog GigaOM, this decision also connected televisions.

By unveiling the version 10.1 of its Flash Player Summit Adobe MAX 2009, Adobe's Open Screen Project materializes.  It aimed to provide a rich experience of the Internet for all sorts of devices, unifying the reader on all platforms (computers, smartphones, TV) and removing licensing fees.  Adobe has signed partnerships with a number of manufacturers from which we find Broadcom, Intel, STMicroelectronics, NXP Semiconductors and Sigma Designs.  In May 2010, Google joined the initiative for its Google TV.

A spokesman for Adobe said however that, like the decisions made on mobile browsers, Flash Player will no longer be supported for TV. "We believe the best approach to deploy content on television is through applications, not through the browser," said the latter.  Adobe AIR tools will therefore be put forward for content providers wishing to offer their feeds on televisions connected.

With Wi-Fi Direct, Intel will upgrade its drivers by offering features peer-to-peer between two laptops. Intel should thus provide a chat client for instant messaging between two machines connected wirelessly without so by a server or an Internet connection. We also find a feature for transferring files by drag / drop between two laptops. A function that is reminiscent of a certain Air Drop that we recently saw appear in Mac OS X Lion. Moreover My WiFi technology is always there to allow you to turn a laptop with Wi-Fi hotspot active Wi-Fi.

For now, Intel does not specify when these new drivers will be available or who can benefit. It's a safe bet that the circuit current Wi-Fi compatible Intel signed, the question remains whether all functions will be exhibited in the said drivers. A final word on the GUI of Wi-Fi Direct who seemed somewhat shifted. Hope that by the completion of its drivers, the interface is reviewed!

Samsung may unveil first Windows 8 tablet

Those who expected a working prototype using an ARM processor will be for expenses: Microsoft has shown a device of this type, NVIDIA logo, but it is a tablet-based Intel chip to be used for developers take their first tests on Windows 8. Designed by Samsung, it adopts a format and a 11.6-inch configuration worthy of many laptops, and is not a straightforward novel, since it was present at the IFA in Berlin in early September.

It’s not clear if that means Microsoft will use the Series 7 Slate to demo Windows 8 next week or if Samsung is working on a special version that may have a different chipset. If it really is a quad-core machine, it seems more likely that the tablet would have an ARM-based processor than an Intel chip, since a quad-core x86 chip uses far more energy than an ARM chip. If Microsoft and Samsung want to show a device that gets more than a half hour of battery life, ARM technology seems like a safer bet.

It comes accompanied by a small docking station (connection via a special connector) which allows to ensure the sector and provides support via an additional USB port and an HDMI port and an Ethernet network. To illustrate the fact that Windows 8 is interesting as well with a touchscreen than with more traditional input devices, Microsoft has asked Samsung to provide the tablet with a Bluetooth keyboard.

One would think that the publisher would have opted for a configuration-based low-power processor, even while a chip based on ARM architecture, this first device with Windows 8. However, two problems arose: how to support ARM's have not yet been revealed (it does not say that it is complete and is not limited to the interface and Metro applications associated), and system performance are still questionable, because development still far from being finalized.

The two partners have opted for a high-end configuration, which effectively guarantees the performance more than adequate, even if it causes some noise and an autonomy that is likely to prove less equipped with ARM products. Finally, though, Windows 8 should not be released in final version for at least a year

The RTM version of Windows available from 8 April 2012?

So we now know that Windows 8 will be commercially available in fall 2012 , the RTM (Release to manufacturing) to builders and developers could be available in April. Microsoft may also release a beta version in September 2011.

The schedule for Microsoft Windows are 8 states: after confirming that the new operating system would be made available to the public in autumn 2012, a source close to the Redmond company told ZDNet that the RTM would in April 2012. Remember, the RTM versions are intended for vendors and developers and whether this is the finished product, it is primarily not for sale. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that some will unveil the latest secrets of the OS to end users ... The x86 and ARM / SoC (system single-chip) would be in the game.

Meanwhile, a beta version should be released, possibly as early as September 2011 still according to the source of ZDNET. Microsoft could use the conference to be held Build in September to make it available. It could also be the one and only beta of Windows 8, knowing that a release candidate for its part may arrive in early 2012. In short, the new Microsoft OS could do much about him in the coming months, after several versions Milestone on the Web at large, who have fueled the buzz for some of its new features.

Microsoft points to the company policy in Firefox

Decisions around the Mozilla's Firefox browser version 4.0 does not appear to have been digested by everyone, the opportunity to highlight Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Last week we learned that two months after its release, Firefox 4 was already considered obsolete by the Mozilla Foundation. Asa Dotzler, to coordinate the community, in fact reported on the official thread of developers, "there have been updates for Firefox 4.0.x and there will be perhaps more if a fault critical security needs to be addressed urgently. " He said this would be a fix and not provided "the security update planned for Firefox 4 Firefox is 5".

Faced with such remarks John Walicki, head of technology in the office of director of communications at IBM, published a commentary on the ticket of a consultant specialist in Firefox. He estimated then that the decision to Mozilla is the effect of a "punch in the belly." Daniel Glazman, formerly responsible for developing Mozilla Composer, NVU software founder and member of the W3C CSS Working Group, shares the same opinions, criticizing the new round of development of Firefox. Asa Dotzler Mozilla countered that records every day 2 million downloads from regular users, while the share of companies deploying Firefox is "a drop, a fraction of a fraction of 1% of our user base ". He added: "The business world has never been one of our businesses."

Taking advantage of this debate Ari Bixhorn, Director of Internet Explorer at Microsoft, said the commitments from the publisher vis-à-vis business. In an open letter to John Walicki, he admits to being interested in a migration from IE to Firefox from IBM. He said while the company has always been and always will be an important business market for Microsoft. He also wishes to clarify that the support provided to the browser is consistent with the operating system. In this case, IE9 will be supported until January 2020.

Google will do R & D in renewable energy

Larry Page, Google co-founder and CEO, has unveiled a plan to invest in research and development (R & D) in renewable energy. Its goal is economic: to produce electricity from renewable sources that are less expensive than from fossil fuels.

This is not the first time that Google invests in renewable energy. The giant has already bought plants solar, geothermal, wind farms or is installing photovoltaic panels on many of its buildings. But it is a little different today, since Google wants to develop its own technology to produce renewable electricity. It intends to capitalize on its patent portfolio relating to clean energy and the R & D establishment should make a marketable solution, efficient and inexpensive.

"We spend most of our time on research and advertising," said Larry Page. "But for people outside the company, which is more interesting is what the latest crazy thing that Google has done." He explains the paradox of his business, and difficulties to invest in renewable energy . If this project RE (lower sign) C (Renewable Energy less than coal or renewable energy cheaper than coal) particularly interested in Google and its engineers, shareholders do not always follow.

Larry Page appears perspective, however, the draft ROE (as a) C has a major challenge: to make renewable energy cheaper than coal in recent years. Five persons were assigned to the project. "Their orders are clear: You're not designing laboratory experiments, you will design useful systems that must deliver effective results in the real world price."

Nokia: Windows is more flexible Android Phone

At a conference held in London, Mr. Elop admitted that Apple had set the bar by setting high expectations of consumers vis-à-vis their smartphones. He insists, however, the appearance of the closed system IOS. "It's Apple that has created Android, or at least they have germinated the conditions necessary to create Android," said Nokia CEO, adding that Google has carefully taken care not to implement a similar system to deploy a competitive strategy against Apple.

"There are always gray areas on Google's open source strategy, and we do not know the nature of them," Elop said, adding that most of the Android source code is proprietary. "If you count the number of lines of code to Android, you have probably a different view of its open source nature," he says. According to him, so Google would be able to dictate the uses of the system. The site specializes Mobiledia reports that the director had made similar comments earlier this month to justify the choice of Windows Phone. He then explained that Google's platform does not give him the freedom to differentiate themselves from the competition.

Nokia accuses manufacturers to focus their efforts on Android Phone at the expense of Windows 7 and do not hide that the company focus on its own platform from Microsoft.

Facebook activates the default recognition of faces: how to disable it?

Confidentially, Facebook has changed a few days ago the privacy settings of social network users to activate the default facial recognition in photos. You said confidentiality?

The face recognition feature is available since last year in the U.S.: When a user sends a photo to Facebook, the service compares to other clichés Tagged, and if it recognizes a person, it suggests the visitor to identify him. One method that has recently been deployed in other countries.

The publisher Sophos was the first, put his finger on the fact that the arrival of this feature in other countries has led to a change privacy settings accounts, leading to activation of the default facial recognition for all users. "There are billions of photos on Facebook, and when your friends are going to upload new photos, the site will attempt to determine if some of them like you. And if so, it will suggest to your friends to tagg with your name. " Of course, the end user's hand remains on the possibility or not to put a name on a photograph, but the fact that the social network may automatically offers to push its members to move more easily to act within the framework a manual process, perhaps at the expense of privacy, especially since Facebook still does not offer the opportunity to approve or not a tag before going online.

Users wishing to disable this function can do so by going to Account Settings , in the "What others share" and then in the "Tip of friends photos where I appear." Then just disable the option, which is actually enabled by default.
