Soon a major patch for Empire: Total War

Despite its indisputable qualities, Empire: Total War is marred by bugs more or less annoying that the developers are struggling to correct. Fortunately, they confirmed the forthcoming arrival of an update described as "major."

It comes to providing solutions to not less than 70 bugs. The Creative Assembly will also take the opportunity to balance the clashes and optimize many elements. In a message on the official forums is Kieran Brigden announcing it before other members of the studio does not detail the contents of this update.

It is to review the problems of artificial intelligence (AI) detected by different players: it should be able to manage naval invasions, even if the phenomenon is rare. The IA should also be more aggressive while stability problems, especially on the road map, will be resolved.

NVIDIA no longer favored by AMD in 2010

AMD has also made important revelations about his relationship with NVIDIA. The licenses granted by AMD in the latter does not allow the effect to develop chipsets for processors of the latest generation servers, code-named Istanbul 6 hearts, and their successors who will grow up to 16 hearts in 2011.

SLI, which has been renewed interest since the advent of computing on the GPU with CUDA technology in this case is therefore unlikely to be borne by the machines hosting these processors. "For 2010 and future years, the solutions designed for AMD work on AMD," said Pat Patla revealed, vice president of AMD's server division, adding that "there should be no new chipsets NVIDIA and Broadcom for servers in 2010. "

NVIDIA is also engaged in a battle against Intel, which refuses to transfer a license to design chipsets for new and powerful Core i7 processors. Meanwhile, no one knew why, most motherboards chipset Intel pledged to do more recently the multi-GPU technology from NVIDIA, SLI. With the two main manufacturers of CPU which so see all the colors, chameleon turns red.

AMD Phenom X4 II 955: DDR3 and up-market

AMD resurfaced about him at the end of April with the launch of the Phenom X4 II 955, its new quad-core processor. Falling in line with recent Phenom II processors, the newcomer is distinguished by an operating frequency slightly higher and the use of socket AM3, which involves the use of DDR3 memory.

Recall that earlier this year, AMD Phenom renew its offer with the release of Phenom second name engraved in 45 nm. While the first Phenom line was recently received, because many technical problems, Phenom II has managed to establish itself as a credible alternative to Intel's offering at least on the entry slot and mid-range. And while the Phenom X4 II 940 we had left a good memory, AMD declined a bit over its offer with the release of AM3 models employing DDR3 memory: it was in mid-February.

A few months later, AMD is back then, with not one but two new processors Phenom X4 II completing the series 900. These II X4 Phenom 945 and Phenom X4 II 955 Black Edition, both with integrated DDR3 memory controller. Overview of newcomers.

AMD Phenom X4 II: Background on the socket AM3

Brand new, still recent, the AM3 socket follows the socket AM2 and AM2 + used by the latest AMD processors. Unlike the previous account AM3 socket 938 pin when he offers no compatibility. In short, no point in installing a processor on the AM2 + socket AM3. But the reverse is not true! A processor socket AM3, the Phenom X4 955 II before us today, can be installed on a motherboard with socket AM2 +.

Technically processors AM2 and AM2 + integrate a DDR2 memory controller and DDR2 only. That is why they can not work on AM3 infrastructure that requires the use of DDR3 memory. In contrast, AM3 processors include a memory controller capable of operating both with DDR2 memory as with DDR3.

AMD Phenom X4 II: Reminders on DDR3 memory

Like the Phenom X4 II 810, previously tested in our columns (see AMD Socket AM3 Phenom II: forward DDR3!), The Phenom X4 II is 955, you will understood by its DDR3 memory controller. For stunned, note that since the release of Athlon 64 processors, which correspond to the K8 architecture, AMD integrates the memory controller directly into the processor. This role is no longer vested in the chipset of the motherboard ... that Intel has a choice to embrace with its recent Core i7 processors with Nehalem architecture. The advantage, at least on paper, is to reduce the latency which can sometimes improve performance.

Faster than DDR2, DDR3 memory effect allows the operating frequency while higher bandwidth chip is twice as high at the same frequency, as the DDR2. The consideration is latency times significantly more important, though less than what we could fear. Using a supply voltage lower, DDR3 memory is expected to consume less than DDR2: formal specification refers to a supply voltage of 1.5 volts. In practice, DDR3 memory modules still require a voltage of 1.7 or 1.8 volt. As for technical specifications, II Phenom processors, both as AM3, all benefit from a memory controller capable of supporting the DDR3 1333.

It should be noted in passing strategic inflection AMD now leaving the task to Intel to try to care of new memory technologies before adopting them in turn. This was the case with DDR2, first proposed by Intel with its Intel chipsets i9x5, but also appeared with the DDR3 with the P35 chipset family. In short, AMD gives Intel wipe casts to enjoy by following a more mature technology.

How to Convert a FAT partition to NTFS

Converting a FAT partition to NTFS is a manipulation is simple, but before giving you the "magic formula" trying to understand how file systems on a stand.
What above all is a system file.

The media whatsoever, home to millions of bits that will then organize and being able to find is the role of the file system.
The file system is based on the management of clusters, ie the smallest unit of disk that the operating system can handle.
An operating system can not manage that entire allocation unit, ie a file will occupy a number of cluster of clusters, but still whole, hence the importance of choosing the file system.
The choice of file system is based on the operating system you use.

The FAT16 file system and Fat 32

The first system used in the environment and the Microsoft FAT (File Allocation Table - The allocation table file), the fat16 is a system based on 16bits (DOS) to write a file with 8 characters and extension 3. From having a 16-bit addressing, this system can have a score of more than 2GB. The disadvantage of a disk to FAT16, is the loss of 16Ko per file for a partition of 2GB. With the arrival of Windows 95 OSR2 (using the FAT16), a significant improvement is reached by integrating a 32 bit (Virtual FAT).
This saves a file with 255 characters, while maintaining compatibility.

FAT32 allows partitions of a size much larger (up to 8 terabytes). In fact the theoretical maximum size for a FAT32 partition is 8 TB, however, Microsoft voluntarily limit to 32 GB on Windows 9x to support NTFS.
In return FAT32 is not compatible with Windows versions prior to OSR2 (OEM Service Release 2). A system starting with an earlier version would have simply not that type of partition.
But in practice a slight gain in performance will be around 5%.

NTFS

NTFS (New Technology File System) uses a system based on a structure called the "master file table" or MFT (Master File Table).
This system helps to contain detailed information on the files, it allows the use of long names, but is sensitive, unlike the FAT32 system.
It is able to differentiate the names in uppercase name to lowercase.
Performance, access to files on an NTFS partition is faster than on a FAT partition. The theoretical limit on the size of a partition is 17 billion To, but the limits of a physical disk is 2TB.
It is at the level of security that NTFS is especially important because it allows you to define attributes for each file.

All versions of Windows XP running FAT, FAT32 and NTFS 5.1.

You can convert your partitions to NTFS without losing data, provided only an operating system (no dual or multi-boot).
To do this, simply use the command line convert.exe:
Click Start, Run ..., write cmd and ok

In the window of the command prompt, enter the following:

convert drive letter: / fs: ntfs

For example, typing convert d: / fs: ntfs, drive D: is converted to NTFS.

Advantages:

NTFS is more powerful than FAT or FAT32 and offers important security features. * Only the NTFS file system allows the use of features such as Active Directory-based security areas.

  • The conversion to NTFS partitions is easy
  • This type of conversion will not damage your files, unlike formatting a partition
  • To support limited accounts, you must use NTFS.
  • If you use FAT32, all users will have access to all files on your hard drive, regardless of their account type (administrator or standard).
  • NTFS is the file system that works best with a large disk.

If you choose NTFS, you can, among others, use the following features:

  • Fields: Used to fine-tune security options, without complicating the administration. Domain controllers require NTFS.
  • Encryption of files: improved security.
  • Permissions: can be set on individual files and folders.
  • Storage: allows you to expand your disk space by facilitating access to removable media.
  • Registration for the recovery of data easier and quicker restoration of the system in case of power failure or system problem.
  • Disk Quotas: Better management of large disk: NTFS allows a maximum disk size largely exceeding that of the FAT system and when the disk size increases, it is not accompanied by a degradation of performance as with the systems FAT.

Some software that can convert to partition and format:
Partition Magic convert NTFS partitions systems as FAT (16 or 32) and FAT (16 or 32) to NTFS
System Commander - Partition Commander.

Firefox 3.0.9 is available for download, with Mozilla hard at work to wrap up Firefox 3.5 Beta 4. On April 21, 2009, Mozilla delivered the latest security and stability update for Firefox 3.0. In this regard, the latest refresh to the open-source browser resolves an issue where Firefox would lose its stored cookies due to a corrupt local database. At the same time, users will be able to now see inline image attachments in emails. Additional issues fixed involve increasing performance when submitting large forms and a problem related to new windows failing to properly come into focus.

Firefox 3.0.9 brings to the table patches for no less than nine critical vulnerabilities. Still, out of the whole nine, only one flaw was rated as Critical, in relation to crashes associated with memory corruption. Two out of the remaining vulnerabilities are considered as posing a High level of risk to end users, with another two just Moderate, and the rest being Low-level threats.

According to Mozilla, Firefox 3.5 Beta 4, the successor of Firefox 3.1 Beta 3, is scheduled to drop by the end of this week. On April 24, 2009, Mozilla has planned a test day for Firefox 3.5 Beta 4 and, in this regard, the next iteration of codename Shiretoko could be made available over the weekend. “Late in the week of April 20” is the only official deadline provided.

After wetting their feet in touch with 5800 XpressMusic and then coming up with top of the line Nokia N97, they must have liked it and now are ready for more.

These new Nokia touchphones should be out as early as this fall, people “familiar with the matter” say.

According to TheStreet.com, Nokia is working on no less the 3 different thin touchscreen phones. And they will be adding haptics vibration feedback from Immersion technologies to them.

New Linux based mobile computers from Nokia

According to the Street.com one of them is what Nokia used to call Internet Tablet, will have a 4.2” touchscreen and “hidden slide-out keyboard. This Nokia MID is expected to ship in Q4, before Christmas.

Another device, codenamed Nautilus, has a very slim touchscreen design, but still sports slide-out QWERTY keyboard. A sensor is used to extend and withdraw keyboard, the keypad itself is ultrathin and features keys that rise up for easier typing. Nokia Nautilus is expected sometime in 2010.

Nokia is committing very serious resources to the development of it’s own new Linux platform (originating from Maemo but significantly rewritten and much more advanced). It will be launching the new type of mobile devices/computers/communicators based on it later this year.

The new Linux platform and devices most likely will be unveiled in late summer/early fall at a big launch event in Germany.

Dell, HP, and Lenovo using Toxic chemical - Greenpeace

Greenpeace has launched its latest version of the Greener Guide to Electronics. The organization has slammed Dell, HP, and Lenovo for going back on a promise that they would be using less toxic chemicals in their computers.

However, all three have said its unlikely they'll hit their targets. Lenovo has pushed the deadline back to 2010 but HP and Dell have yet to reveal a new deadline.

Greenpeace said that Apple was the only one of the world's five biggest computer makers to start reducing its use of toxic chemicals.

In its Guide to Greener Electronics, Greenpeace also revealed that Philips had considerably reduced its e-waste, putting the company 4th in the list of the greenest tech companies, compared to its position of 15th last year.

The report also praised Samsung for publicly supporting a reduction in greenhouses gases and Dell and HP for cutting in emissions in their own operations.

BlackBerry AppWorld application download store

RIM has launched its BlackBerry AppWorld application download store in the UK, US and Canada. From today, BlackBerry handset owners can download both free and paid-for applications to customise their smartphones.

Around 1,000 applications will be available for download by the end of this week, with many more waiting in the wings. The AppWorld store is similar in concept to the iPhone App Store that works with iTunes and has been a huge success for Apple.

At a one-on-one demonstration with RIM in London today, PC Advisor was shown the BlackBerry AppWorld download service on BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Curve handsets. Described by RIM as an "on-device portal", the service will work on any BlackBerry handset that uses 4.2 software or newer. RIM says that this applies to any BlackBerry handset that has a pearl navigation ball, but not scrollwheel-style models.

Devices dating back as far as the October 2006 launch of the original BlackBerry Pearl handset are able to use the BlackBerry AppWorld by downloading it from blackberry.com/appworld.

Developers set the price for their applications, which can be initiated direct from the device and typically only 1MB or 2MB. Applications are stored on the handset's internal memory and can be managed via a dedicated MyWorld menu on the BlackBerry. Here, users can get an overview of installed applications, reinstall or uninstall them and check on how much available memory they have.

Synopses about each download offered can be viewed by clicking on the application name, while users are also encouraged to review items they use. RIM also provides a Top 25 applications list that is updated on a daily basis. The list is determined by how many times the application is downloaded and user ratings.

RIM has set up AppWorld such that users are only offered applications that are available to and relevant to their home country. For example, UK users would not be offered the Pandora music service, as it works only in North America.

Asked whether it was possible to skew these ratings by getting lots of people to download and favourably review the same application, RIM said that its policy is to allow users to say what they like about an application as long as the comment is pertinent and not profane.

While RIM hasn't said how many of the applications on offer are free versus the proportion are paid for, our demonstration of the service this morning showed a good selection of freeware and trialware as well as paid-for applications. For example, the Telmap satnav mapping service was listed as free, with an explanation that it was free to try for the first 14 days. Other applications, such as MySpace, however, were free to download and keep.

Prices are displayed on the device in the handset owner's local territory and are automatically translated from US $ (if that's where the developer originates from).

Payment for BlackBerry AppWorld downloads is managed by PayPal. RIM says it's possible that additional micro payment systems will be offered at a later stage.

While the UK, US and Canada are the launch territories for the service, many other countries will also get AppWorld - timeframes for specific country rollouts have yet to be determined.
