LG to buy Kodak's OLED business

Eastman Kodak Company announced today that it will sell all the assets associated with its OLED business to a group of LG companies. The company has also has into a technology cross-license agreement with LG Electronics, Inc., which will allow each company broad access to the other?s patent portfolio.

Kodak's move to sell its OLED business is expected to tighten Kodak?s investment focus and strengthen its financial position. Financial details were not disclosed.

Kodak has been a pioneer in developing technology associated with OLED displays. In the 1970s, Kodak scientists developed the world's first viable OLED material.

Kodak will have continuing access to its OLED technology for use in its products. Subject to customary closing conditions, the transaction is expected to close by the end of the year.

"As we said earlier this year, OLED is one of the businesses we wanted to reposition to maximize Kodak?s competitive advantage at the intersection of materials and imaging science," said Laura G. Quatela, Kodak?s Chief Intellectual Property Officer and manager of the company?s OLED business. "This action is consistent with that strategy. Our OLED intellectual property portfolio is fundamental; however, realizing the full value of this business would have required significant investment."

Kodak has also entered into a technology cross-license agreement with LG Electronics, Inc., which will allow each company broad access to the other?s patent portfolio.

The license agreement is royalty-bearing to Kodak. Additional financial details were not disclosed.

The agreement could pave the way for LG to advance in the development of OLED displays, competing against Sony and Samsung.

"We are pleased to have reached a mutually beneficial arrangement that advances the interests of Kodak and LG and validates the strength of Kodak?s intellectual property portfolio," said Laura G. Quatela.

The companies also agreed to conclude their patent litigation, which involved a subset of their imaging technologies. Pursuant to a settlement agreement, Kodak and LG will request that the U.S. International Trade Commission terminate the investigations initiated earlier this year following complaints filed by both companies in late 2008.

Yahoo and Microsoft Finalize Search Agreement

Yahoo and Microsoft today announced that the companies have finalized and executed the definitive Search and Advertising Services and Sales Agreement and License Agreement in accordance with the letter agreement announced in July.

The companies released the following joint statement:

"Microsoft and Yahoo! believe that this deal will create a sustainable and more compelling alternative in search that can provide consumers, advertisers and publishers real choice, better value, and more innovation.

"Yahoo and Microsoft welcome the broad support the deal has received from key players in the advertising industry and remain hopeful that the closing of the transaction can occur in early 2010."

The plan to ink a 10-year Web search and advertising pact was unveiled in July and promises to set the stage for a Yahoo!-Microsoft offensive against Google, the king of the lucrative search and advertising market.

Under the no-cash deal, Yahoo will use Microsoft's new Bing search engine on its own sites while Yahoo will provide the exclusive global sales force for premium search advertisers.

Microsoft's tie-up with Yahoo gives the companies a larger share of the Web search market but analysts are divided on how much it will actually deliver in making inroads against powerhouse Google.

YouTube: pageview featherweight

YouTube is testing a new page view for its videos with the aim to facilitate the rapid loading and reading. The initiative Lite Facebook seems to have given some ideas on YouTube. The famous site for sharing videos will in turn offer those who want a lighter version. As part of its incubator of ideas TestTube, YouTube proposes to test a version called for Feather pen.

YouTube has recently announced the move to 1080p mode for high-definition video, is well aware that not all users are not equal in terms of processing equipment or bandwidth for Internet access. One of the objectives of Feather is to address this disparity.

However, this does not change the compression level of a video, but to make some changes to the elements "parasites" of a pageview that could slow it.

With Feather, the player is configured by default for playback as standard, and therefore not necessarily HD. In addition, several features of YouTube are reduced to their minimum expression as videos submitted or reviews (much shorter list).

"All this results in a user experience that aims to keep things simple, loading and playing videos faster," said YouTube. Depending on the adoption of Feather and improvements in latency, this page featherweight way out or not laboratories YouTube. For now, Feather does not apply to all the videos and the user may choose to test or not since this page.

Google offers its own DNS

Google is developing its own DNS service for free. Google continues to work for the good of the Web. After all logic when there is this much, and what benefits the Web ultimately benefits Google. A kind of quid pro quo. The Mountain View company has announced Thursday the launch of its own DNS service for free: Google Public DNS.

The protocol for DNS Domain Name System is an essential infrastructure of the Internet that allows for the correlation between an obscure IP address and domain name more explicit for the average user. At each visit a website via a browser, a DNS lookup is made. Research or research before rather than a page a bit complex is loaded in its entirety. According to Google, a user generates hundreds of DNS queries each day and browsing experience may take longer.

Generally, these are the ISPs to the Internet that support the DNS service for the customer seeking the servers run by agencies such as ICANN with global reach. Com. Public DNS with Google, Google wants to take his hand in doing the work of the ISP.

With a method of preloading (prefecthing), Google Public DNS is able to respond more quickly to queries DNS: "before the end of life (TTL) of a recording, we constantly update, asynchronously and independently of the queries users for many popular areas.

Fast but safe with the implementation of a method of protection against attacks of DNS cache poisoning. Google Public DNS does not mean protection against malware. Google's service also operates any kind of filtering or blocking. No redirection nor in case of typos for a service that is intended in accordance with standard DNS.

Involve a little more in Google's Web browser can give some sweat, and always the risk of a drift Big Brother to which Google responded by stating that only strictly necessary information is retained. The temporary logs that contain IP addresses are deleted within 24 to 48 hours, while the logs held longer (for security reasons and to improve the service) are unidentified. Nevertheless, there is no correlation with other services (web search, advertising), Google provides.

Google is not alone in offering such a service and there are particular OpenDNS. Also free OpenDNS operates cons by a redirect in case of input error with the appearance of ads.

For now, Google Public DNS is still at an experimental stage. To test by entering the DNS settings for its network configuration address of one of two available servers: 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4.
