Google News Makes You The Editor!

Google News is making it even easier to follow the latest stories on whatever subjects interest you. We are happy to announce our Custom sections directory, which gives users of some of our English-language editions the expanded ability to create comprehensive sections to put on their Google News home page or share with other users.

One of the great things about online news is the ability to filter by topics. Google News has long recognized this so we've allowed users to track articles based on keywords of their choice. But it has been a little tricky at times. For example, to follow news about topics related to outer space, you would have to create a pretty complex filter.

Now, if you're using Google News and can't find the perfect section, just create your own! You can do that by adding the relevant keywords. Then, if you are happy with the resulting section, you can publish it to a directory so others can benefit.

Once you are done, you can either publish your custom section for the world to see or just keep it for yourself. Go on, customize and share some news.

You can check out the Google help center for more information on how to subscribe to custom sections or create them.

Droid joins 'Google phone' army in smart phone war

A Motorola Droid smart phone goes on sale Friday, joining the growing ranks of smart phones on the open-source operating system backed by Google.

With Droid, which will work on the Verizon telecom network, Motorola is taking on mobile devide powerhouses such as Apple, Nokia and Research in Motion (RIM).

"People are gravitating to Android phones because they are different and trendy. Droid may be the new 'in' phone," said analyst Rob Enderle of Enderle Group in Silicon Valley.

Taiwan-based HTC brought the first Android phone to market late last year.

Google chief executive Eric Schmidt recently proclaimed that the smart phone market was on the cusp of an "explosion" of Android devices.

Market tracking firm Gartner agrees, predicting that there will be at least 40 models of Android phones within a year, and that they will be the second place mobile platform by the end of 2012.

Reports surfaced on Thursday that Verizon is poised to add an HTC Android phone to its stable.

"In a few years Android will be the second most popular smart phone running neck-and-neck with Apple," Gartner analyst Van Baker told AFP on Thursday.

Apple iPhones have become coveted devices since they were introduced in early 2007.

Verizon and Motorola have managed to create a marketplace buzz with mysterious video featuring fighter jets releasing metal pods that slam like meteorites into forest, sea, and prairie.

The pods crack open to give glimpses of Droid devices, then end with a cowboy uttering "What in the world is that?" and a message that proclaims Friday the "drop date."

Verizon poked at Apple with 'iDon't' advertising highlighting things iPhones lacks, and US newspapers on Thursday sported full-page ads heralding the Droid's arrival.

Droid devices are likely to pose more of a threat to Blackberry smart phones made by Canada-based RIM than they are to iPhones, according to analysts.

"It's not an iPhone killer," Gartner vice president of mobile computing Ken Dulaney said of Droid.

"This is really about changing the mix at Verizon. It will be some attack on RIM."

Blackberry devices dominate the Verizon network, and the Droid offering will give subscribers a tempting alternative to RIM devices.

Meanwhile, iPhones in the United States are serviced exclusively by telecom colossus AT&T, which has no Android smart phones on its network.

"Droid is not going to draw anyone away from AT&T to Verizon," Dulaney said. "It will keep people at Verizon from going to AT&T and keep some people from going to Blackberry."

US smart phone users get discounted prices on handsets in exchange for signing multi-year service contracts with carriers.

Breaking contracts typically results in hefty fees, a fact likely to discourage people from switching to Verizon just to have Droid phones, according to analysts.

"RIM is likely to get hurt in Verizon and lose a lot of business," Baker said, suggesting subscribers will be lured to Droid handsets while not having to change carriers.

Droid is built with a slide-out keyboards, which appeal to smart phone users prone to typing as is the case with Blackberry devotees, said Dulaney.

RIM is rising to the challenge with the release later this month of a Bold 9700 smart phone.

"The Bold 9700 is outstanding," Dulaney said. "For those that like keyboards it is top-of-the-class."

Blackberry devices appeal to a "different class of user" that likes typing and demands a secure network for taking care of business or other sensitive matters, according to the analyst.

"(US President Barack) Obama is not going to be using iPhone," Dulaney said. "There isn't security in iPhone and Android is a little weaker with support."

Microsoft may end up a victim of Android's success, with the Google software supplanting the Redmond, Washington technology giant's mobile operating system as an industry standard.

"Android is taking the place of what Microsoft wanted to be, the licensed operating system for smart phones," Dulaney said.

Toshiba 320GB 1.8-inch HDD Series

Toshiba introduced a new line up of 1.8-inch HDDs with a maximum capacity of 320GB, the highest yet announced by the industry, targeted at thin and light mobile PCs and portable external hard disk drives.

The new series delivers three models in 160GB, 250GB and 320GB capacities, and will start mass production from December.

Improvement of the dual platter MK3233GSG family's perpendicular magnetic recording head and the disk's magnetic layer secure an areal density of 801Mbit/mm2 (516Gbpsi), the industry's highest for 1.8-inch HDDs. The new drives deliver highly efficient power consumption, high-level durability and quiet seek operation.

Equipped with a serial ATA interface (3.0Gbps), 5,400 RPM rotational speed and a large capacity 16MB buffer memory, Toshiba's MK3233GSG HDDs are ideal for notebook PC applications that require high storage capacity and high speed processing. The areal density improvement allows MK3233GSG to boost internal data transfer rates by 15% from the MK2529GSG, the company's earlier 250GB 1.8-inch HDD.

Capable of withstanding the demands of mobility, the drives tolerate up to 1,500Gs of non-operational shock and 500Gs of operational shock making the 1.8-inch form factor 50 and 25 per cent more durable than the most robust 2.5-inch HDDs.

The latest range of 1.8-inch drives launched today also includes the dual platter 250GB MK2533GSG and the single platter 160GB MK1633GSG. Toshiba also today announced the immediate availability of 120GB 1.8-inch MK1235GSL HDD. This low 5-millimeter profile drive operates at 4,200rpm and boasts ultra-low power consumption.

The new 250 and 320GB drives, the MK 2533GSG and MK3233GSG, cut acoustic noise during seek to 19dB, a 4dB decrease from the MK2529GSG, the top-end drive in Toshiba's previous generation of 5,400RPM 1.8-inch HDD.

The drive uses a dual-lens laser diode and a precision spindle motor control system for accurate reading of BD/DVD/CD discs. The drive also writes on DVDs at 16x and on CDs at 40x. Its price will be around €100.

Both drives come with a SATA interface.

Samsung developed an 8-chip technology with a thickness of just 0.6mm

Samsung developed an 8-chip technology with a thickness of just 0.6mm, the world's thicknes multi-die package according to the company.

Multichip refers to the product that piles up single semiconductors to increase memory capacity and this is the first time to implement less than 1mm in thickness.

The new technology was applied to 32GB nand flash multi chip. The new 0.6mm-thick package, which consists of eight identical dies, uses 30nm-class, 32Gb NAND Flash chips, each measuring just 15?m, to deliver a 32GB NAND solution.

Existing nand flash multi chip package implemented only 1mm by processing wafer to 60?m. If process the thickness of wafer to below 30?m, it will be hard to maintain strength of chip and secure yield rate because gap between multi chips will become too narrow.

Samsung succeeded in overcoming technical limit to process wafer to 15?m. By securing processing technology, it will be able to pile more chips to increase capacity. This means that consumers can see thinner SSD and memory cards, for example.

Samsung claims that the 8 layer multichip with 0.6mm is the most suitable solution in mobile devices market. The new packaging technology is claimed to deliver a 40% thinner and lighter memory solutions for high-density multimedia handsets and other mobile devices.

In addition, the package technology can be adapted to other existing MCPs, configured as system in packages (SiP), or package on packages (PoP).

Intel sued by the U.S. Justice for unfair competition

On the other side of the Atlantic, the world leader in microprocessors has recently become the subject of yet another legal process to its business practices regarded as unfair.

The Attorney General of the State of New York, Andrew Cuomo, said on Wednesday it had opened legal proceedings involving the California group Intel.

He said the world number one processor would not have played the competition in recent years, using unfair business practices. It evokes the payment of large bribes and kickbacks to various pressures very senior level to ensure that PC makers emphasize its processors.

The prosecutor did not refer to employees who have stupidly skidded face some greenbacks, but officials at Intel and the manufacturers, and intends to see the heads fall.

For its part, Intel denies these accusations, speaking of a procedure that will not benefit consumers or justice (but for injured competitors perhaps?). As manufacturers singled out, namely Dell, Hewlett-Packard and IBM, they did not wish to speak on the subject.
