Gmail Goes Offline

Web-based email is great because you can check it from any computer, but there's one little catch: it's inherently limited by your internet connection. Google is starting to roll out an experimental feature in Gmail Labs: offline Gmail.

So even if you're offline, you can open your web browser, go to gmail.com, and get to your mail just like you're used to.

Once you turn on this feature, Gmail uses Gears to download a local cache of your mail. As long as you're connected to the network, that cache is synchronized with Gmail's servers. When you lose your connection, Gmail automatically switches to offline mode, and uses the data stored on your computer's hard drive instead of the information sent across the network. You can read messages, star and label them, and do all of the things you're used to doing while reading your webmail online. Any messages you send while offline will be placed in your outbox and automatically sent the next time Gmail detects a connection. And if you're on an unreliable or slow connection (like when you're "borrowing" your neighbor's wireless), you can choose to use "flaky connection mode," which is somewhere in between: it uses the local cache as if you were disconnected, but still synchronizes your mail with the server in the background.
Offline Gmail is still an early experimental feature and Google has made it available in Gmail Labs for those of you who want to test it out.

The offline Gmail will be available to everyone who uses Gmail in US or UK English over the next couple of days.

Antivirus Solutions Available For Windows 7 Beta

Microsoft's Windows 7 Beta already has a few vendors' workable antivirus solutions on hand for the eventual release of the new operating system, Microsoft says.

In anticipation of the Windows 7 Beta release, Microsoft maintains it has been collaboratively working with several security vendors in an effort to start ramping up antivirus solutions, blogger Brandon LeBlanc said in a post. Among the solutions available for Windows 7 Beta, which became available for download earlier this month, are Symantec's Norton 360 3.0 Beta, AVG Internet Security, AVG Anti-Virus and Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows 7 -- all of which are available on the Windows Security Provider page.

However, while antivirus solutions that work well with Windows 7 Beta might be available now, partners aren't knocking themselves out to push them onto their customers. For one, partners who have tested Microsoft's new operating system say that Windows 7 Beta seems to have similar security issues to Vista -- which Microsoft once touted as its most secure operating system -- and partners don't expect subsequent antivirus solutions to be radically different.

"It's really going to be a similar situation to Vista. It's a pretty similar technology," said Nathan Ware, CTO of Rain Networks, based in Bothell, Wash. "The software packages that were successful in running on Vista, I would expect those same ones to run on Windows 7."

And Windows 7 Beta is just that -- a beta. By its very definition, it could change significantly between now and its final release later this year. It will be used and tested by users but ultimately replaced by a final version, potentially rendering antivirus software less than effective, if not obsolete.

Ware said he probably would start to promote antivirus products for Microsoft's new operating system closer to the time of its final release, which will likely be in July, around the time of Windows 7 Beta's expiration date of Aug. 1. Until then, he said that "nobody's rushing out to buy (antivirus)."

"Windows 7 is a long ways from being done," Ware said. "What you see now might not be what you see in three months."

How spammers hijack sites

One of the major trends throughout 2008 is spammers' increased use of cloaking techniques to hide their poor reputation behind someon
e else's good reputation.

This means that instead of sending email from a known spam IP address or -- more commonly -- from an infected bot server, spammers are finding new ways to send messages using valid or known mail servers, mainly webmail accounts, which have a reputation as a legitimate email source.

There are several methods spammers use to hijack good reputation, in order to make use of it to deliver their unwanted mail.

According to a recent report from Commtouch, a security company, spammers sign up for thousands of free email accounts, through the use of compromised CAPTCHAs. CAPTCHAs (short for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) are word images used to ensure that a human being is filling out a registration form, as opposed to a machine.

Algorithms to break CAPTCHAs are readily available to purchase for illicit use, enabling spammers to generate a nearly unlimited supply of free email accounts from which to send their messages, without intervention.

In order to gain access to legitimate email accounts without registering them themselves, widespread phishing attacks can persuade enough unwary users to provide their legitimate credentials to criminals.

Spammers often use legitimate hosting sites to host their illegitimate content. They can also create multiple redirection pages on these sites using compromised CAPTCHAs. Sites put in this awkward position recently include: live.com, tripod.com, and photoshosting.com.

Panasonic’s VIERA full HD 1080p PZ850 series features four models - the 46-inch class TH-46PZ850, the 50-inch class TH-50PZ850, the 58-inch class TH-58PZ850 and the 65-inch class TH-65PZ850. The introduction of the IP enabled televisions, a technology that provides access to on-line content directly from the televison with VIERA CAST technology, is one of many advances found in the PZ850 line. In addition, the PZ850 series features a Pro Setting Menu, allowing the consumer to access professional calibration software; an improved native resolution contrast ratio of 30,000:1 and a dynamic ratio of 1,000,000:1; Digital Cinema Color Re-Mastering; 24p native reproduction; Game Mode; an SD memory Card slot; RS-232C connection; four HDMI connections; increased luminous efficiency; lead free panels; 100,000 hours to half brightness and a PC input. The 850 series further expands the capabilities of the SD Card feature by utilizing the H.264 codec to display high definition video recorded on a HD camcorder equipped with the H.264 codec.

Recognizing the growing use of Plasma HD televisions in the gaming world, Panasonic created the Game Mode, which minimizes the time lag when displaying game images on the Plasma screen. The Mode synchronizes the response of the game image to the player’s operation, thereby producing an extremely clear image with no motion artifacts.

Digital Cinema Color Re-Mastering is a value added technology that allows for color reproduction, enabling VIERA displays to reproduce the essential colors for viewing movies. 24p native reproduction, which negates the need for 3:2 pulldown, resulting in a smoother picture, is another feature that provides the best possible viewing experience.

IBM may cut 16,000 jobs

International Business Machines Corp, the biggest technology employer, may cut thousands of jobs this month amid the global economic s
lowdown, according to the employee group Alliance for IBM.

Employees have been hearing that layoffs will take place in late January, said Lee Conrad, national coordinator of the Alliance, an organization seeking union recognition at Armonk, New York-based IBM. The size of the reduction may be larger than those in the past few years, he said in an interview.

“Generally they go in batches of a couple hundred here and a couple hundred there,” Conrad said.

A post on the Alliance’s website said the company may cut 16,000 jobs, which would top the 15,600 eliminated by Chief Executive Officer Sam Palmisano in 2002. The worldwide slump has tightened companies’ technology budgets and IBM may report a 1.6 per cent drop in sales last quarter to $28.4 billion, based on the average analyst estimate.

“There’s likely to be production cutbacks at IBM,” said Timothy Ghriskey, chief investment officer at Solaris Asset Management LLC in Bedford Hills, New York. “There will be job cuts. For now, reducing the workforce to benefit the viability and competitiveness of the company makes sense.”

Solaris, which oversees $2 billion, held 29,000 shares of IBM as of Sept 30.

IBM rose $2.41, or 2.8 per cent, to $89.23 at 4 pm in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares lost 22 per cent last year.

‘Rebalance our workforce’
IBM has frequently pruned its staff over the past few years. The company had two waves of job cuts in 2007, totaling more than 2,000 positions. IBM had $318 million in job-reduction costs that year, compared with $272 million in 2006.

“We constantly rebalance our workforce and continue to invest in growth areas,” said Ian Colley, a company spokesman. He declined to comment further when asked about the Alliance posting.

IBM had 386,558 employees at the end of 2007. Palo Alto, California-based Hewlett-Packard Co, the world’s largest personal-computer maker, had 321,000 as of Oct 31, and Panasonic Corp, based in Osaka, Japan, had 313,594 as of Sept 30.

Not only is the plastic housing of Renew made from plastics comprised of recycled water bottles and 100 percent recyclable, but it is also the world’s first carbon neutral phone. Through an alliance with Carbonfund.org, Motorola offsets the carbon dioxide required to manufacture, distribute and operate the phone through investments in renewable energy sources and reforestation. The phone has earned Carbonfund.org’s CarbonFree® Product Certification after an extensive product life-cycle assessment.

“Today, natural resources, energy and time are more precious than ever before,” said Jeremy Dale, corporate vice president, global marketing, Motorola Mobile Devices. “From the product’s design, to the packaging to our partnership with Carbonfund.org, we wanted to ensure that this device makes the right impact with consumers and the environment.”

When designing the packaging, Motorola was able to reduce its size by 22 percent and the box and all of the materials inside are printed on 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper. In addition, a postage-paid recycling envelope in box makes it easy to return your previous mobile phone for recycling at no cost.

Renew was designed for eco-conscious consumers as well as the millions of people who put making phone calls as their number one priority in a mobile phone. With nine hours of talk time, CrystalTalk technology and messaging capabilities, Renew makes environmental responsibility affordable for consumers everywhere. LG Netflix-enabled Broadband HDTVs

LG will be showcasing the world's first Netflix-enabled HDTVs at CES this week. LG Electronics today extended its groundbreaking partnership with Netflix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX), as the two companies announced the first broadband-enabled HDTVs with Netflix streaming software embedded directly in the TV, requiring no external device. LG's new LCD and plasma "Broadband HDTVs" will display the growing library of movies, TV episodes and high-definition (HD) content that Netflix members can watch instantly directly on the TV with Ethernet connectivity.

The new LCD and plasma HDTVs will join the LG BD300 Network Blu-ray Disc Player, the first Blu-ray disc player to stream movies instantly from Netflix. These products – and five new models of Blu-ray Disc players and home theater systems planned for 2009 – will offer consumers a variety of ways to enjoy more than 12,000 choices of movies and TV episodes instantly from Netflix. Netflix members owning one or more of the devices pay as little as $8.99 per month for unlimited instant streaming and unlimited DVDs from a catalog of more than 100,000 DVD titles in more than 200 genres.

Netflix began offering its instant streaming functionality on the PC in January 2007 and made the leap to the TV last year via Netflix ready devices such as the LG BD300 Blu-ray disc player. With today's announcement, Netflix will be streaming, for the first time, directly to the TV with no external device required.

Instantly streaming content from Netflix to the LG HDTVs will rely on a broadband connection and Queue-based user interface. Netflix members will use the Netflix Web site to add movies and TV episodes to their individual instant Queues. Those choices will automatically be displayed on members' TVs and available to watch instantly through the HDTV. Once selected, movies will begin playing in as little as 30 seconds. With the accompanying remote control, Netflix members will be able to browse and make selections right on the TV screen and also have the ability to read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they will have the option of fast-forwarding and rewinding the video stream.

LG Electronics and Netflix will demonstrate these broadband HDTVs this week at the 2009 CES®, Booth #8214, Central Hall, Las Vegas Convention Center.

Samsung shows 6.5mm thin LED TV at the CES 2009

One of the greatest things about all consumer electronics shows (whether we're talking about CES, CEDIA, IFA or CeBIT) is the fact that they're the places where the world's most advanced technologies “congregate” visitors being able to take a look at certain products (some of them only prototypes) that will certainly push forward everyone's expectations even further. And that's exactly the case with Samsung, which might rock the CES 2009 show with what appears to be the world's thinnest HDTV, measuring just 6.5-mm in thickness.

The new ultra-thin Samsung LED TV panel also is up to snuff when it comes to display technology. The new panel supports a 240Hz refresh rate and Wide Color ControlPro promising a wider spectrum of colors.

this very thin form factor has been attained by using LED backlighting technology, which allows for very high-quality images, as well as ultra-thin panels. For this reason, it would seem that Samsung's future displays will be known as the “LUXIA LED TV” line, emphasizing the very important role of light-emitting diodes.

Apple may unveil cheaper iPhone

Apple Inc will probably begin selling a lower-priced version of the iPhone in the first half of 2009, tapping a new chipmaker for a key component, according to Friedman, Billings, Ramsey & Co.

Qualcomm Inc will replace Infineon Technologies AG as the supplier of the baseband processor -- the chip that translates radio signals into voice and data -- in the new model, analyst Craig Berger said in a report. The phone might debut in the second quarter, he said, citing unidentified industry sources.

Apple may be turning to lower-cost products to fuel sales in developing countries as the US economy shrinks. The company is planning a smaller version of its Shuffle music player and a cheaper MacBook laptop, Berger said. None of the devices is likely to be ready to be unveiled at next week’s Macworld conference, where Apple typically makes product announcements.

“Mobile phone sales figures will continue to grow worldwide in 2009 and most of that growth will come from developing countries,” said Hakim Kriout, a portfolio manager at Grigsby & Associates, a New York-based securities trading firm that owns Apple shares.

“Turning the iPhone into a product line by adding another device for the lower end of the market is the next logical phase.”

Jennifer Bowcock, Apple’s spokeswoman for the iPhone, didn’t immediately return a call or email seeking comment. San Diego-based Qualcomm’s Bertha Agia also didn’t immediately return a phone call.
