Google Docs adds folder sharing

Increasingly collaborative, as seems to be the motto of Google for its Google Docs. Thus, if the user is already able to share a document or publish it on the internet it is now possible to share an entire folder containing different types of documents (texts, spreadsheets, presentations ...) . This new feature was implemented in response to user suggestions posted here.

Once the file is created, simply right click to bring up the contextual menu and choose Sharing. The user is then able to invite contacts from their choice or making the public record accessible from a specific URL. Note that licensing is easier since they are allocated for the whole package and not for each document.

In addition to some cosmetic changes, also note the possibility of uploading multiple documents in one go.

P2P would represent more than 18% of Web traffic

In one study, whose full results will be published next October 19, the American company Arbor Networks said that the trade involving P2P networks will represent only 18% of world traffic, against nearly 40% in 2007. To do this, it indicates to have based on the analysis of some 264 exabytes (billion GB) of data having passed through routers 110 providers of Internet access worldwide. Web traffic (generated through a browser) would at the same time increased from 10 to nearly 50%.

Arbor Networks said to have based on an analysis of the packets on the network, rather than a study of procol employees in order to stick as closely to actual practice. However, it will wait to see how the data were interpreted. The chart below tends to show an analysis ports, or we know that more and more followers of other eMule and BitTorrent are not using the default port defined within the client.

How to explain this disaffection for P2P? It was not until the publication of the study to complete a comprehensive analysis but Wired, which relays Tuesday preliminary results ahead two tracks. The first is related to the development of broadcasting sites legal videos, first and foremost throne Hulu in the U.S., not forgetting of course platforms such YouTube and others, which open more widely to content provided by the studios and TV producers. The second, increasingly popular, is in direct download sites like Megaupload or Rapidshare. In France, the Hadopi it would be wrong target?

Firefox 3.6 will use the accelerometer of phones

On the blog hack.mozilla.org, Christopher Blizzard, a staunch supporter of open source in Mozilla announced that the next version of Firefox browser will be able to communicate with the accelerometer embedded in some laptops to restore the orientation the page being read.

Mozilla is therefore provided a programming interface to JavaScript developers to make their websites compatible with this technology. "We've added support for Linux and Macs and some Thinkpads for which drivers are available," says Blizzard. Eventually, Mozilla could also embed the technology within its mobile browser Fennec. Yahoo! also working on a similar device with its environment BrowserPlus.

In addition to online games, however we could consider the use of this technology. To test the assumption of the accelerometer, it will install one of the latest builds of Firefox.

Scanner Pro transforms iPhone into portable PDF Scanner

Readdle announces the release of Scanner Pro 1.0, an iPhone application that transforms the device into portable scanner. It lets iPhone owners scan multi page documents into PDF files, send them by email, access over Wi-Fi and even upload to MobileMe iDisk or any other WebDAV enabled server. Scanner Pro is available exclusively on the Apple App Store at USD $6.99.

Scanner Pro is designed to scan multi page documents and transform them into industry standard PDF files. It allows people to set password on PDF document to protect data with 40-bit RC4 level encryption. This feature is very important for those who use iPhones for work since many business documents contain sensible information that should be protected from unauthorised access after scanning.

To overcome weaknesses of the iPhone camera, Scanner Pro uses special algorithms to enhance image quality. Aditionally, users can manually adjust brightness and contrast to make text look even better. Also, since major documents are text based, Scanner Pro can automatically convert all documents into grayscale thus greatly reducing size of the resulting document.

Scanner Pro supports a number of ways to share PDF documents after scanning. The file can be uploaded to MobileMe iDisk, Box.Net, Humyo and any other WebDAV enabled file storage; sent by email using current iPhone Mail account and even transferred to Mac or PC computer over Wi-Fi.

“Situations when there is printed document that should be send by email and there is no scanner nearby is familiar to many business people including myself,” explains Alexander Tyagulsky, Readdle CMO. “Scanner Pro is made to save the day when this happens to you.”

Pricing and Availability:
Scanner Pro 1.0 is available exclusively on the Apple App Store at $6.99 (USD) in the Business category. The application is compatible with iPhones running iPhone OS 2.2.1 and later.

Apple director Levinson leaves Google's board

Google Inc. said Monday that Arthur Levinson has resigned from the Internet search leader's board, averting a potential showdown with government regulators over his overlapping job as a director for computer and gadget maker Apple Inc.

The Federal Trade Commission had been investigating whether Levinson's double duty on the boards of both Google and Apple would lessen competition between the companies as they increasingly collide in the same markets.

The same issue had dogged Google Chairman Eric Schmidt until he stepped down from Apple's board two months ago.

Levinson's resignation from Google's board takes effect immediately, ending his 5 1/2-year stint as a director. He will remain on Apple's board, where he has been a director for nine years.

Levinson, who is also chairman of biotechnology pioneer Genentech Inc., owns a bigger stake in Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple than he does in Mountain View-based Google, according to regulatory filings.

Google didn't specify the reason for Levinson's departure, but it has previously acknowledged the FTC's inquiry into his roles at Google and Apple.

In a statement, FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz indicated his agency was prepared to sue Google and Apple if they hadn't purged their boards of the potential conflicts of interests.

"Google, Apple, and Mr. Levinson should be commended for recognizing that overlapping board members between competing companies raise serious antitrust issues and for their willingness to resolve our concerns without the need for litigation," Leibowitz said.

Schmidt, who is also Google's chief executive, left Apple's board shortly after his company unveiled plans for a computer operating system that would compete with Apple's Mac computers. Google also makes software that runs on cell phones, putting it in competition with Apple's iPhone.

Google didn't say whether it will fill Levinson's vacant seat. The resignation leaves Google with nine directors, including Schmidt and its co-founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

Google shares rose $7.79, or 1.5 percent, to close at $524.04 after trading at an annual high of $525.76 earlier in the session. Apple's stock gained 34 cents to $190.81 after trading at a 52-week high of $191.51.
