Taking advantage of a slight upturn in the global market for PC sales, Taiwan's Acer surpassed Dell in the U.S. during the third quarter of 2009, revealed Wednesday night preliminary studies published by Gartner and IDC, and approximates the Current number one, HP.
For IDC, Acer machines accounted for 14% of total PC shipments in the period, compared to only 11.4% a year earlier. At the same time, Dell would be increased from 14.2 to 12.7%. Gartner attributed to him on 15.4% of shipments to Acer, against 12.5% a year earlier, while Dell is credited with 12.8% market share. HP remains the leader with about 20%, according to two analyst firms.
Shortly before the announcement of these results, Gianfranco Lanci, president of Acer, said he thought his firm would pass Dell in the next two quarters. A spokesman for Dell, interviewed by Reuters, meanwhile suggested that the first priority was not the race for market share, but the establishment of growing profitability.
Overall, the market has enjoyed a slight recovery, with increased shipments of around 0.5% according to Gartner, and 2.3% according to IDC. The challenge for manufacturers, a major problem: the average price of buying a computer would have decreased by almost 20% a year.
