PlayStation 3 Might Support 3D Gaming Next Year

There's a pretty tough war going on on the console market, with the top three manufacturers, Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony, fighting over every customer. Each of the major companies are trying to make their products more attractive in the eyes of the everyday user and, as such, are investing heavily in developing new features for their own consoles.

We've seen Microsoft introduce the New Xbox Experience, a major revamp of the user interface meant to make the Xbox 360 friendlier to casual gamers who need a more intuitive experience. We even saw Nintendo announce that it would introduce a video streaming service aimed to make the Wii a tool for people to communicate with each other. Sony on the other hand limited itself to launching the new Home online service, through which it wants to create a full-pledged social network for all the PlayStation 3 users.

But it seems that Home wasn't the only thing that Sony will introduce for its console, as Neil Schneider, the CEO of Meant To Be Seen, a company that specializes in certifying stereoscopic 3D technology, revealed that the Japanese company planned to bring a fully-stereoscopic 3D gaming and Blu-ray experience to the PlayStation 3.

Schneider said that Sony was cooperating with Blitz Games Studios, a company that develops stereoscopic 3D licenses and that it might implement this new technology in the following year. “The best part is console support will only need a bios upgrade to work. We are told that the ability to add this capability via bios may be unique to Sony PS3 versus the other console solutions.”

For those of you who don't know, stereoscopic 3D technology allows regular two dimensional media to display visible depth, and it is employed in a variety of movies, in order to offer viewers a more realistic experience.

Although this idea might seem a bit weird, it might be a feature that will certainly attract at least some people. But until we get an official statement from Sony about this subject, we won't need to search for those 3D glasses.

New High-End Speakers from Acoustic Zen

If you're into high-end audio gear, then the newest release from Acoustic Zen should raise your interest. It goes by the name of Maestro (indeed, not one of the newest things in the industry) and it is a very expensive piece of technology. Obviously, this high price was also caused by the fact that the Maestro is the flagship loudspeaker in Acoustic Zen's range, surpassing the former number one, the Crescendo.

If you were expecting something completely new and even groundbreaking, you should either wait longer, or look in other places, as it seems that the Maestro is nothing more than a hyped-up version of the Crescendo.

Nevertheless, there is nothing bad in this, because we're still talking about an impressive loudspeaker that has received more power and more clarity, and that's a good thing. The Maestro sports the same driver complement like the former flagship, namely a 2" top-drawer horn-loaded ribbon tweeter, which can reach a 40 kHz upper frequency point suitable for any of the most discerning audiophiles' ears, flanked by dual 5" underhung voice coil high-mid drivers.

On the LF side, the Acoustic Zen Maestro sports two 10" woofers loaded in the bottom enclosure and delivering a rolling bass down to 20 Hz via the rounded oval bass reflex front-firing port. The contraption has received a new enclosure placed at the top, containing a 5" low-mid driver, completing the array for a real 4-way sonic reproduction.

This device can handle 150-300 W RMS per channel, and sports an 87 dB sensitivity. It measures 1702 mm H x 381 mm W x 457 mm D, and weighs in at a hefty 112 Kg a piece. The finish choices are the same like in the case of the Crescendo, that is rosewood, walnut burl, and grenadilla. The announced price puts the Acoustic Zen Maestro off your Christmas gift list, unless you're filthy rich – a whopping $36,000 per pair.

No bonus for Google staff this year

Google Inc, owner of the world’s most-used search engine, is giving employees mobile phones instead of cash gifts this year as it reins in costs during the recession, according to a person familiar with the matter.

In the past Google has been known for giving its employees very good Christmas bonuses, but alas, not this year as the economic downturn has also hit Google. This year's Christmas present from Google is a Dream phone, or a G1, as most of us know it as.

About 85 per cent of workers will get a handset powered by Google’s Android operating system as a holiday gift, said the person, who asked not to be identified. Google handed out $1,000 cash gifts to most employees last year

About 85 percent of Google's staff around the world will get a Dream phone sent out to them and it will be network unlocked and it's a special limited edition of the handset with the Google Android on the back. They will also work over WiFi without a SIM card, which might be good news to some. Google employees are not allowed to sell it on, although we have a feeling a few of these will still pop up on eBay or possibly given away as Christmas presents to friends and family.

Chief executive officer Eric Schmidt said last month that Google is seeking to control expenses and add fewer jobs as the global slump curbs online advertising growth. T-Mobile USA Inc began marketing the G1 Android phone in October, offering many of the same features as Apple Inc’s iPhone, including Web browsing.

The holiday gift is separate from the performance bonus handed out by the company, the person said.

The memo lists 17 countries where the phone won’t work, including Brazil, Russia, India and China. Employees in those countries will receive about $400, the cash value of the phone, Google said in the memo.

How to Increase Laptop Performance

Remember that when you use a modern operating system and run out of memory for your software, the operating system swaps out part of the memory to the hard disk to free up the memory for more tasks. If you run several programs at once or have little RAM, this swapping can occur constantly, slowing the computer down.

Now, note that the laptop's hard drive is a power drain on your battery. The more you must use the hard drive, the more the laptop uses the battery.

Naturally, it would seem that if you increase the RAM on your laptop, you would reduce the amount of memory swapping. This will increase your computer's performance, and since your hard drive will be accessed less, could improve your battery life.

LaCie Ethernet Disk: Up to 6TB in a Rack-Mounted Backup Appliance

  • 1U 19" rack-mounted backup solution for small and medium business
  • Most comprehensive data backup and protection software suite in its class
  • Can be used together with Apple Time Machine
  • Powered by trusted Windows XP Embedded
  • Instantly store and share files with Mac, PC, Linux or Unix users

LaCie today introduced a new version of its award-winning Ethernet Disk, a network-attached storage (NAS) device featuring a capacity increase of up to 6TB in a 1U 19" rack form factor. Designed by Neil Poulton, it is the most compact all-in-one rack-mounted backup appliance operating in heterogeneous ecosystems.

Designed for small and medium business needs, the Ethernet Disk is powered by the field-proven Windows XP embedded operating system that provides all the necessary features for data backup, storage and file-sharing through its Gigabit Ethernet connection. Thanks to Active Directory compatibility, the LaCie Ethernet Disk supports a total of 100 users with customizable access rights to different shares, with up to 25 concurrent users.

"Microsoft is pleased to work with LaCie to provide the core embedded foundation for its new Ethernet Disk," said John Doyle, Senior Product Manager for the Windows Embedded Business. "We are excited to provide customers with an innovative platform that allows them to develop a, smart, connected device that offers increased security and storage capabilities."

Developed to provide data protection for Windows, MAC, Linux and Unix-based workstations, the LaCie Ethernet Disk ships with three licenses of both Genie Backup Manager ProTM for Windows and Intego Backup Manager ProTM for Mac, which can perform scheduled file backups for workstations. The LaCie Ethernet Disk’s ability to work together with Apple Time Machine allows Mac users to take advantage of the continuous data protection the software provides.

The included backup software protects against major disasters and natural catastrophes by offering a computer recovery function for selected workstations. Optional extra licenses are available through the LaCie online store.

The LaCie Ethernet Disk can integrate into any global disaster recovery plan, as its built-in engine can back up its volumes either onto a USB-connected DAS (direct-attached storage) to be taken off-site, or remotely onto another NAS.

"Backing up data – even mission-critical data – always boils down to making and storing copies of data, located on your primary storage device, onto a secondary device," said Erwan Girard, LaCie Product Manager. "For this reason, the perfect backup companion for your information system should be kept simple and cost-effective. The LaCie Ethernet Disk offers computer backup and recovery, and backs itself up onto a NAS or DAS, all at the best price-per-terabyte ratio in the market. It is therefore an excellent complement to the complex and expensive technology used in front end storage servers."

Wazabee Mobile 3D Products

The Wazabee 3DeeShell uniquely depicts 3D content such as games, pictures and videos on the Apple iPhone in an extraordinarily realistic way. The housing contains a lens that eliminates the need for special 3D glasses, while serving as a stylish protective skin at the same time. The lens can easily be removed at any time in order to switch back and forth between normal 2D and spellbinding 3D graphics.

Wazabee has also developed three software applications, currently available for download from the iPhone App Store, that enable users to access existing 3D content as well as create their own: 3DeeVUsion, 3Dee!oadr and 3DeeCamera.

  • For iPod Touch users, 3DeeVUsion makes it possible to view three-dimensional content and create their own content as well by taking advantage of the device’s simple touchpad operation.
  • With the 3Dee!oadr Web application, users have access to a stock of more than 500,000 3D images thanks to a connection to Yahoo Flickr! image services. The software also enables users to upload their own 3D images and share them with friends.
  • With the 3DeeCamera, users can generate stereoscopic pictures in a matter of seconds using mobile software and a native iPhone camera. Various viewing modes mean that the pictures can be viewed with or without 3D glasses.

New Wazabee 3DeeFlector Makes U.S. Debut at MacWorld 2009

The Wazabee 3DeeFlector, an autostereoscopic overlay for the MacBook Air and other 13.3-inch-notebooks, will debut at MacWorld 2009. Just like other Wazabee products, the 3DeeFlector allows the depiction of both 2D and 3D content without an additional monitor or 3D glasses.

The Wazabee 3DeeFlector is suitable for displaying 3D content, movies, animations, designs and games. Alongside eye-tracking software that provides for the perfect “3D experience,” a number of other applications for the Wazabee 3DeeFlector are also available:

  • The Power Player media software plays three-dimensional pictures and videos. The DVD player optimizes visualization for any type of stereoscopic 3D DVDs.
  • Avatars take note: The plug-in for Second Life™ generates a stereoscopic 3D experience in virtual worlds.
  • The Wazabee Games Driver allows users to experience games in stereo 3D.

The Wazabee 19-inch Gaming Display will be on hand at MacWorld to provide an exceptional on-screen gaming experience. Due to its unique 3D game visualization, the display offers users a completely new interactive feel in their playing style – as if they were right at the center of the action.

Dell XPS 13 leather-wrapped Laptop

Dell has introduced its latest laptop that comes with leather-wrapped casing which is dubbed as the new Dell XPS 13. The pics we saw back then don't really do the laptop justice, as you can tell by these snaps. Meanwhile, that rumored Adamo is very much real, and very much like what we've been hearing. Apparently the device -- which the company plans to market as the "world's thinnest laptop" -- was slated to be released this month, but has been pushed back till at least February.

Worldwide-famous designer Philippe Starck, the Zikmu loudspeaker system has been created for wireless gadget company Parrot and boasts a surprisingly alluring profile, despite its sheer simplicity and minimalist look. Famed for the stunning perspective upon the most common of everyday things, Starck has endowed the fluid shapes of the Zikmu with a strong personality, pleasantly contrasted with the overall simple and almost spartan looks. If you were expecting something classic from Starck, then you have been waiting in vain.

These speakers are fairly tall, measuring 2.5' (76 cm), and their floorstanding design combined with the small footprint will make them a nifty element in your décor, able to bring forward elegance and refinement, without being obtrusive or over-assertive.

Unlike other high-class loudspeakers, the Zikmu will not create any “sweet spot,” because it's not loaded with traditional drivers. Instead, Philippe Starck decided to use NXT flat panel ones, which were more capable of rendering his vision on acoustics, as Strack himself declared: “We were not aiming to create just another speaker.”

“Our design focused more on making the air vibrate. There is actually a three-dimensional feel to this vibration, meaning that the air is palpable, almost human-like in presence, like a fragrance.” Indeed, even by simply looking at these speakers one could by all means feel their uncommon nature and almost strange aura.

On the tech side, Parrot has brought in the cavalry – having achieved a worldwide fame for their exceptional wireless technologies, the British introduced their best in A2DP/Bluetooth streaming and Wi-Fi connectivity. The Zikmu also comes with a dock for iPods/iPhones, and with charging capabilities, but the fun part is that you can simply stream music wirelessly from your network and enjoy it with these speakers

Furthermore, things have also been taken care of on the comfort side – the Philippe Starck Zikmu speakers will be shipped with a wireless remote control, allowing you to interact with your sound system from any corner of the room, or from your cozy couch. The product will start being available in spring 2009 for a price of around $1,500 a pair.

Toshiba announced 512GB Solid State Drive and Next-Generation SSD Family Using 43nm MLC NAND

Toshiba Corp. (Toshiba) and Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)*, its subsidiary in the Americas, today announced the expansion of their line up of NAND-flash-based solid state drives (SSD) with the industry's first 2.5-inch 512-gigabyte (GB)(1) SSD and a broad family of fast read/write SSDs based on 43 nanometer (nm) Multi-Level Cell NAND. The new drives provide a high level of performance and endurance for use in notebook computers, gaming and home entertainment systems, and will be showcased at International CES 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 8 - 11, 2009.

In addition to the 2.5-inch, 512GB drive, the 43nm NAND SSD family also includes capacities of 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB, offered in 1.8-inch or 2.5-inch drive enclosures or as SSD Flash Modules. Samples of the new drives will be available in the first quarter (January to March) of 2009, with mass production in the second (April to June) quarter.

Toshiba's second-generation SSDs bring increased capacity and performance for notebook computers. They utilize an advanced MLC controller, which is also compatible with further advanced processes, that achieves higher read/write speeds, parallel data transfers and wear leveling to optimize performance, reliability and endurance. The drives enable improved system responsiveness with a maximum sequential read speed of 240MB per second (MBps)(2) and maximum sequential write speed of 200MBps enabling an improvement in overall computing experience, and faster boot and application loading times. The drives also offer AES data encryption to prevent unauthorized data access.

"The solid state drive market is evolving rapidly, with higher performance drives to meet market requirements, and differentiated product families targeted for appropriate applications," said Mr. Kiyoshi Kobayashi, Vice President of Toshiba Corporation's Semiconductor Company. "This new 43nm SSD family balances value/performance characteristics for its targeted consumer applications, through use of MLC NAND and an advanced controller architecture."

Toshiba and many market analysts expect SSDs to begin to gain significant traction in the market in 2009, growing to approximately 10% of the notebook market by 2010, and 25% of the notebook market by 2012. Toshiba expects the value/performance of its MLC NAND-based SSD line-up to help speed the acceptance of solid state storage.

Toshiba will continue to promote innovations that widen the horizons of the NAND Flash market and support its continued leadership in that market. The company will spur demand for SSDs in notebook PCs, netbooks, laptops and digital consumer products by enhancing its lineup, offering products with different densities and interfaces in a range of packages, while advancing device performance. Microsoft Issuing Emergency Fix For IE7

Microsoft is taking the unusual step of issuing an emergency fix for a security hole in its Internet Explorer software that has exposed millions of users to having their computers taken over by hackers.

The "zero-day" vulnerability, which came to light last week, allows criminals to take over victims' machines simply by steering them to infected Web sites; users don't have to download anything for their computers to get infected, which makes the flaw in Internet Explorer's programming code so dangerous.

Microsoft said it plans to ship a security update, rated "critical," for the browser on Wednesday. People with the Windows Update feature activated on their computers will get the patch automatically.

Tata sky crosses 3 million Subscribers

The DTH juggernaut continues. Tata Sky has pocketed three million subscribers, quickly adding the last one million over just seven months.

3G Spectrum Auction on Jan. 16 in India

The government has finally unveiled the details of the upcoming 3G spectrum auctions and said that the online bids for bagging these airwaves will begin on January 16. The department of telecom (DoT), in its ‘information memorandum’ has also said that the auction of spectrum for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA), which supports technologies such as WiMax, will be held two days from the close of the 3G auctions.

WiMAX spectrum will be auctioned two days later from the close of 3G auctions. December 23 is the date for pre-bid conference while final date for submissions is on January 05. Names of eligible bidders will be disclosed on Jan 09 followed by mock auctions on Jan 12 & 13.

The government also came out with more clarity on spectrum available circle wise. Spectrum available in Mumbai can accommodate 4 players while Delhi has space only for 2. Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh have space to accommodate only 3 players as compared to majority of other circles where four players will offer 3G services. Rajasthan will have to wait as their lack of spectrum in the circle. The above is apart from BSNL and MTNL which will offer services in their respective circles of operations.

For WiMAX, three players will be able to fit in for all the 22 circles and the auction process will be four stage comprising of invitation stage, pre-qualification, biding and grant of spectrum.

The government’s ‘information memorandum’ has for the first time provided clarity on the quantum of spectrum available for 3G auctions. So while the spectrum crunch in Delhi will mean no more than 2 private GSM players can offer 3G services, Mumbai, India’s most lucrative telecom market will see at least 4 GSM players offering high end 3G services.

However, a foreign player entering the Indian telecom market as a 100% entity needs to find an Indian partner to hold a 26% stake in the joint venture before it launches commercial services. Further, in a bid to encourage foreign telcos to participate, the DoT has also said that mobile number portability would introduced soon.

MNP, which allows customers to retain their mobile numbers even as they switch operators will allow new entrants to lure some of the existing subscribers from the incumbents.

Download Google Chrome 1.0

Google has finally released the full version of Google Chrome browser and yanked the 'beta' label off it. Google Chrome 1.0 is available for download and installation on Windows.

Chrome’s official release comes at a time when Google is accelerating efforts to redefine the browser around open Web standards while adding rich media and secure code extensions. Google’s open source native project is just one possible future for the Chrome platform, where applications can run in a browser but incorporate native code modules. For example, this would allow developers to perform image processing on the local client without requiring round trips to the server.

This finished version focuses on stability, plug-in performance and addresses the audio-video glitches. Speed has also been their main focus and Google boasts improved V8 JavaScript Engine, bookmark manager, and privacy controls.

Chrome engineers are next working on adding features like form-auto fill and RSS support to Chrome. Like Firefox s addictive and productive extensions, Chrome is also going under development on the same path, along with support for Mac and Linux. Chrome's new extension system is expected to allow independent developers for bringing richer functions to the browser.

Bluetooth to go: Speakers for your cell phone and MP3 player

You don't need much more than your MP3 player--whether it's a standalone device or an app built into your cell phone--to enjoy all your favorite tunes on the go, but certain accessories can up the entertainment factor.

For example, if you spend a lot of time in hotel rooms, a portable speaker is practically a necessity, allowing you to rock out without being tethered to your headphones. In fact, why not do away with the wires entirely? One of the more advanced features you can find in portable speakers on the market today is built-in Bluetooth technology. This wireless protocol lets you stream music from any device with integrated A2DP technology, which can be found in most media-centric cell phones (save the iphone) and even a handful of dedicated MP3 players.

The speakers often include integrated keys for controlling music playback, and some even offer mics for use as a speakerphone--and, really, we see no reason not to kill two birds with one stone.

OpenCL faster computers with the help of GPU

The specifications of the programming environment (API) OpenCL (Open Computing Language) were published today. It is an open standard that allows use free to use any kind of chips for all sorts of calculations.

Hitherto reserved to the processing of graphics, massively parallel architecture of a graphics card is much more suited to some calculations than a central processor (CPU). The encoding of a video or a simulated meteorological phenomenon are calculated for example a much more effective in conjunction with dozens of processors flow of a graphics card that series with a few hearts CPU.

GPGPU technology, which is to delegate to the graphics card some calculations usually borne by the central processor, have emerged from among AMD and Nvidia have respectively launched CUDA and ATI stream. OpenCL is in turn able to benefit from any kind of chips, as chip signal processing (DSP), and not just graphics cards. It has the advantage of being a standard multi-platform open to all developers can access without payment of royalties, while competing technologies CUDA and ATI Stream require a specific development applications.

A collaboration of some thirty players in the computer, including AMD, Intel and Nvidia, developing OpenCL was initiated by Apple before being assigned to Khronos Group, the consortium maintains for years already OpenGL, cousin of dedicated graphics OpenCL. It will be an integral part of Snow Leopard, the next major version of Mac OS X, which has accelerated its development, which took only 6 months. Nvidia followed by the announcement and has already announced that its graphics cards CUDA take as provided natively support OpenCL. AMD has meanwhile made no announcement, but ATI Stream technology is based on OpenCL, ATI Radeon will probably be compatible.

Microsoft finally, who had already ousted OpenGL to its own technology Direct3D, always alone with DirectX should nevertheless expanded in its next version of support compute shaders, which fulfill the same objective as the GPGPU.

Sony Announces Initiatives to Improve Profitability in its Electronics Businesses

Sony has embarked on a series of measures to strengthen its corporate structure and bolster profitability across the Sony Group, including a significant workforce reduction.

These initiatives are in response to the sudden and rapid changes in the global economic environment.

Particularly within its electronics business, where Sony has been most affected by the acute downturn in the economic climate, the company has already undertaken certain short-term measures, including adjusting production, lowering inventory levels, and reducing operational expenses. Going forward, Sony intends to adjust product pricing to mitigate the impact of the appreciation of the yen, curtail or delay part of its investment plans, and downsize or withdraw from unprofitable or non-core businesses. Furthermore, Sony plans to realign domestic and overseas manufacturing sites, reallocate its workforce and reduce headcount.

Through these measures, Sony will aim to establish a corporate structure capable of delivering estimated total annual cost savings of more than 100 billion yen by the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010.

Specifically, within the semiconductor business, Sony intends to cut investment expenditures this fiscal year by outsourcing a portion of its planned increase in manufacturing of CMOS image sensors for use in mobile phones to third parties.

In addition, following the rapid demand slowdown in television markets, Sony has decided to postpone recently considered plans to invest in production expansion at the Nitra plant in Slovakia, which is one of Sony's sites assembling LCD televisions for the European market.

Based on such measures, Sony is planning to reduce investment in the electronics business by approximately 30% in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010, compared to its mid-term plan.

By the end of the current fiscal year, Sony plans to cease production at two overseas manufacturing sites, including Sony Dax Technology Center in France, which manufactures tape and other recording media. By further advancing initiatives including rationalizing its manufacturing operations, shifting and aggregating manufacturing to low-cost areas, and utilizing OEM and ODM partners, Sony plans to reduce the total number of manufacturing sites by approximately 10%, from the current total of 57, by March 31, 2010.

Through measures including the realignment of its manufacturing sites, a review of its development and design structure, and the streamlining of its sales and administrative functions, Sony will implement a company-wide (including Headquarters) rationalization. Sony intends to reallocate and optimize its workforce through programs including work reassignments and outplacements.

As a result of these measures, by March 31, 2010, Sony plans to reduce headcount in the electronics business worldwide by approximately 8,000, out of approximately 160,000 as of September 30, 2008. At the same time, Sony plans to reduce headcount in its seasonal and temporary workforces.

Sony plans to outline the anticipated impact of these measures, including anticipated expenses related to their implementation, in Sony's updated forecast of financial results for the current fiscal year to be included in its third quarter earnings announcement, scheduled for January 2009.

Video clerks power new movie recommendation engine

Even as technology threatens the survival of video rental stores, serial entrepreneur Stuart Skorman thinks there's still a place for the movie-matchmaking advice of veteran video store clerks.

To prove his point, Skorman hired more than 20 former video store clerks to pour their collective wisdom into a new Internet search engine, called ClerkDogs, that's being unleashed Tuesday.

Skorman is betting this combination of human intelligence and data crunching will emerge as a more engaging and intuitive alternative to the highly automated movie-recommendation system that has helped fuel the success of online DVD rental leader Netflix Inc.

Netflix spits out recommendations for its 8.7 million subscribers by drawing upon a database of 2 billion ratings that its customers have entered during the past decade. By knowing whether you liked one movie, Netflix suggests others you might enjoy by mining the past preferences and renting patterns of subscribers who watched the same movies.

ClerkDogs also dives into a vast data pool in order to suggest movies, but augments its findings in key ways.

After it asks visitors to enter the name of a movie they liked, ClerkDogs' engine generates a list of suggestions based on a computer-driven analysis of video clerks' insights and written reviews. And for a more personal touch, it lets its users tweak recommendations based on their moods at the time of a request. ClerkDogs users can slide a scale indicating whether they are looking for movies with a little more romance, suspense, humor and other elements contained in the movie they initially selected.

The revisions help ClerkDogs get even closer to a visitor's interests, pulling from the information provided by the video store clerks.

Skorman, a former video store owner, likens the system to having a conversation with a movie buff — something that's not possible on Netflix's recommendation engine because it relies on a strict one- to five-star rating system and doesn't adjust for a renter's changing emotions.

"The reasons people choose certain movies are such a complex thing," Skorman said. "Netflix has done a wonderful job with its system, but it has gone as far as it can go."

Netflix's recommendation engine accounts for about 60 percent of the service's rental requests, a sign that it's doing a pretty good job divining what customers like, Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey said.

Even so, in hopes of making its recommendation engine even more effective, Netflix has been offering a $1 million prize to anyone who can develop a software program that improves upon its matching system by at least 10 percent. After more than two years, the leading entrant in Netflix's contest is within 0.44 percentage points of hitting the target.

"That final stretch is going to be like going up the final 300 yards of Mount Everest," Swasey said.

This isn't the first time that Skorman, 60, has tried to build a better mousetrap for movie lovers.

In the 1980s, he took over a video store in Vermont and expanded it into a successful chain that he sold to Blockbuster Inc. for $3 million during the early 1990s.

A few years later, he moved to the San Francisco area and started Reel.com, an online service specializing in selling movies on videotape and, of course, recommending movies. Hollywood Video bought Reel for $100 million in 1998, generating a $17 million windfall for Skorman.

As much as he liked the money, Skorman had at least one regret. If Reel.com hadn't been sold to a traditional video store chain, he thinks he might have been able to realize his vision of logging DVD rental requests on the Web and then delivering the discs to customers through the U.S. Postal Service.

Netflix embraced the DVD-by-mail concept in 1999, creating the foundation for a company with a market value of $1.5 billion.

While Netflix was revolutionizing the home entertainment industry, Skorman was losing most of the money he made from the Reel.com sale on an Internet education site, Hungry Minds.com, and a holistic drug store, Elephant Pharmacy, that he opened in Berkeley, Calif.

Now Skorman is counting on ClerkDogs to supplement his retirement fund. The San Francisco-based startup hopes to make money by selling advertising and leasing its recommendation system to merchants that rent and sell movies. Services that distribute video through Internet connections and cable boxes are also possible ClerkDogs customers.

"We have been meeting with just about everyone involved in the movie business," Skorman said. "Just about the only one not talking to us is Netflix."
