Dell offers Chromium OS before its time

Dell uses the open source foundation of the future OS of Google Chromium for OS propose to hold a netbook Mini 10v. Experimental support.

One key to the time in field experiments. Engineers who work for the manufacturer Dell rushed on the basis of Chrome open source OS to provide a first contact for users with a 10v Mini netbook. A specially adapted version of Chromium OS as an image of 8 GB to put on a bootable USB key (image file to a USB key to install the operating system).

Doug Anson explains the procedure to follow, said that without a network connection Chromium OS is not interesting, not surprisingly, the OS is free to the dedicated web and its applications as the central element Chromium browser (Google Chrome for the final version of Google).

The startup time is not that of 7 seconds but approaching the expected 12 seconds. If Doug Anson has taken particular care that the Wi-Fi Adapter Broadcom is functional in the image proposed Chromium OS, he noted several problems, including the order of 5 to 10 minutes before the connection manager network does not allow the user to view the different access points and choose your connection. It also underlines the fact that this is a support of the OS is highly experimental and totally unstable.

Dell is known for offering pre-installed operating system Ubuntu on some models. Google Chrome OS must appear on the first computers in the second half of 2010 through OEM partnerships. Google has already given names such as Acer, ASUS, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo or Toshiba but not Dell. The manufacturer will he continue to experience Chromium OS in its own corner?
