Apple wants to block 8 Samsung devices in US

Apple (AAPL) on Monday gave a federal judge a list of eight Samsung products it wants pulled from shelves and banned from the U.S. market.

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh asked for the list after a jury in San Jose last week slammed Samsung with a $1.05 billion verdict, finding that the South Korean technology giant had "willfully" copied Apple's iPhone and iPad in creating and marketing the products. Samsung plans an appeal.

The list of smartphones that Apple would like to see removed from the market is as follows: Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S II (AT & T) Galaxy S II (Skyrocket), Galaxy S II (T-Mobile) Galaxy S II Epic 4G Galaxy S Showcase Galaxy Prevail and Droid Charge.  The Galaxy S II is the main target to kill in his versions offered by U.S. carriers.

Koh on June 26 banned the Galaxy Tab 10.1 from the U.S. market after finding it likely violated a "design patent." Samsung is now asking for that ban to be lifted after the jury found the computer tablet didn't infringe that particular patent, but it did find it infringed three Apple's software patents that cover the popular "bounce-back" and pinch-to-zoom features.

The judge has scheduled a Sept. 20 hearing to discuss Apple's demands for the sales bans. She asked Apple on Friday to submit the list of products its wants removed from U.S. stores after Samsung complained it doesn't have enough time to prepare for the scheduled hearing.

For its part, Samsung took the floor and told the Wall Street Journal 's willingness to fight against the ban on its products in the USA. "We will take all necessary measures to ensure the availability of our products in the U.S. market." Said the firm, which board already on changes terminals covered by the ban, pending the launch of the procedure appeal, which could delay the proceedings.

This initiative will enable the company to accelerate its investment in the Linux ecosystem while providing its support to the developer community.

Philips stops production of 21:9 televisions due to lack of success

Lack of demand from consumers, Philips has decided to stop production of television format 21: 9. The manufacturer was launched on selective market in 2009.

Philips has confirmed the news site FlatpanelsHD , who questioned the possible presence of new brand at IFA, where she had hitherto used to present its new TV models 21: 9.  The company said it had already finalized the production of this type of screen, and the models still sold commercially are the last in stock: a story that only needed to be formalized since the firm was not announced for a while on this sector.

The manufacturer had relied in 2009 on the ideal format for viewing films in cinemascope, without black bars.  In 2010, Philips introduced the range Cinema 21:9 Platinum and its sequel, Cinema 21:9 Gold in 2011. TVs with premium price of around 4000 euros.  High prices to the general public for a screen size moviegoers who mostly Philips did not meet the expected success.

But if the company stops costs with 21: 9 TV side, it will still an LCD monitor in the same format at IFA.  With a size of 29 inches, the screen is capable of displaying a ultra-high resolution of 2560 x 1080 pixels.  Its price has not been disclosed.

Samsung announces Drive Link, a car-friendly app

Samsung today launched Drive Link, an in-car smartphone application designed for safe use while driving. Drive Link is built around the three most popular uses of smartphones while driving: listening to music, navigating to a destination and talking hands-free. It also includes shortcuts to other useful driving applications that have also met exacting safety certification standards.

"Drive Link" is the equivalent of the Samsung "Car Mode" built into some of Google Android smartphones without custom interface: an application with large fonts and big buttons giving access to the most commonly used in car.  It meets the criteria of the Japanese Automotive Manufacturers Association, which is one of the most stringent safety requirements.

At startup, "Link Drive" appears in this case a home screen with the date and time, local weather and if the next appointment with the opportunity to easily start a call or guidance to contact or address informed.

The main menu displays three buttons on it to access the interfaces adapted the music player, solution guide and call function, and two buttons displaying a list of applications and a simplified menu settings .

Solution provides speech synthesis on reading it aloud text messages, emails and messages from social networks, but unlike any speech recognition solution is integrated.  The application supports MirrorLink function, an implementation of the standard VNC protocol to interface with the smartphone entertainment system dashboard.
In terms of entertainment, every music file stored in the smartphone is accessible to be played through the car's speaker system. Users can also go well beyond their music libraries with TuneIn (requiring version 6.2 or later), a global Internet Radio app which offers 70,000 stations and two million on-demand programs streaming from every continent. Further compatible internet apps will be made available soon.

Staying in touch during journeys can often be important. With this in mind, Drive Link incorporates a feature called Text-To-Speech, available in English (U.S./U.K) French, Italian, German, and Spanish, which enables all incoming messages, emails and updates from social media websites to be automatically read via the car's speaker system so that drivers' eyes are always on the road, ensuring maximum concentration and safety are maintained. All personal contacts saved in the phone are loaded to Drive Link and users can also make a phone call directly by dialing on the keypad.

Drive Link is launching on the Samsung GALAXY S III (GT-I9300) and will be made available on other smartphones running Google Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) in the near future. The app is downloadable from Samsung Apps in 21 countries including Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Ukraine, and United Kingdom.

Windows 8: Microsoft unveils logos and instructions

Preparation for the launch of Windows 8 also requires the transmission to partners of instructions that allow them to display their products compatible with future operating system. These, however, must follow the rules set by the publisher.

Many manufacturers of computers or devices logically wish to take advantage of the interest generated by the commercial launch of Windows 8, October 26.  To do this, they will be keen to display on their packaging or point of sale of their products compatible with the new Microsoft operating system.  They will do this to meet the specifications determined by the publisher.

It goes particularly well defined by a logo which only the background color may vary from four choices.  Size, font and mention of compatibility are in turn fixed according to the model shown below.

In its documentation, Microsoft insists that only the phrase "Compatible with Windows 8" and / or "Compatible with Windows RT" will be accepted.  Idioms such as "Optimized for Windows 8" or "Certified for Windows 8" on the other hand are prohibited.

"Do not refer to the product simply as 8 or RT. Windows always include the name, "said the editor. "Do not use abbreviations like Win Windows 8, Win8 or W8," he says again.

Microsoft stresses that certification may appear on the packaging of new products since July 31.  Interested manufacturers must however wait until 1 September to highlight their display devices outlets.

LG launches gaming portal for Cinema 3D Smart TVs‎

LG has announced the arrival of Game World, a platform designed to provide users of its connected TVs for viewing of 3D.

Game World is a new service that will only be available on LG TVs with passive 3D technology, dubbed Cinema 3D by the company.  Obviously, the fact that the TV is connected to the Internet is also a prerequisite for access to the catalog of games.

Catalog of games is vast but will also oriented towards a family audience, with titles kinds arcade, puzzle, sports, action or simulation.  Among them is the port of the game Shadowgun, offered on smartphones and tablets, the classic Plants vs Zombies or Air Penguin 3D and Cut the Rope, also well known mobile players.

Titles can be played with the Magic Remote LG, which includes a motion detector, or with another joystick offered by another manufacturer - LG does not, for the moment, what are the compatible devices.  All games include 3D compatibility: it is also one of the main arguments put forward by the company, which announces paid and free titles.

Game World should be globally launched Cinema 3D range by the end of the year.

Sony stops production of optical drives for computers

Sony has announced the cessation of production of optical drives from March 2013. The company says the strong competition in the sector has resulted in lower prices that began the profitability of the market, preferring to abandon it.
From March 2013, the Sony subsidiary dedicated to the manufacture of readers and writers discs (CD, DVD) Sony Optiarc Inc..  stop the production of such products to destinations computers and the general public.  In words, this company based in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan, is simply closed.

Chinese and Korean competition was due to the activity of the Japanese, which currently sells its readers at a loss.  In addition to the obvious economic factor to justify such a judgment, Sony also mentioned a decrease in demand, especially on the side of the laptop.

Currently undergoing restructuring, Sony therefore chooses to leave the sector to turn to other, more promising: the firm will soon eliminate 10,000 jobs across its subsidiaries.  Optiarc, meanwhile, employs more than 400 people, whose future is uncertain.

Samsung launches LED transparent displays

Samsung Electronics announced the availability of innovative 1:1 ratio LED square display (UD22B) and transparent display (NL22B), accelerating its leadership in the commercial B2B display market in the second half of this year.

Samsung’s distinctive 1:1 ratio square display and all-in-one transparent display showcase provide business owners with extraordinary solutions for creating entirely new types of promotional displays in retail, commercial and public locations.

It's also unveiling the NL22B, a transparent LCD screen / case that builds on the see-through tech we saw at CES. The interactive display is designed to let you see facts and figures while keeping one eye on the merchandise at all times. It's imagined to be used in high-class jewelers, using interactivity to tease us toward buying that $4,000 watch. Both are being shown at IFA this week, but don't expect to see them available to buy -- so stash those dreams of covering every wall in house with these things, at least until you own your own advertising firm.

Samsung’s environmentally friendly Direct LED backlight technology used in the UD22B square display generates less heat to reduce power consumption by more than 30 percent compared to existing LCD display technology, lowering operating costs. The UD22B also conserves energy by adjusting brightness according to surrounding brightness, and users easily manage content using Samsung’s unique MagicInfo software solution.

Providing an alternative to traditional rectangular displays, Samsung’s LED square display with 1:1 screen ratio supports unlimited configurations and opens up new potential for creating immersive visual experiences. With 5.5 mm bezel-to-bezel measurement for seamless installation and digital loop out to produce a single image across up to 100 displays, Samsung’s 21.6” square display lets commercial users explore limitless possibilities as they design artistic video walls. Multiple displays can easily be connected to create creative mosaics as well as cubic or other three-dimensional shaped displays. Without being limited by the installation space or shape, businesses can create more interactive point-of-sale and advertising displays that engage the consumer.

675 000 dollars for 30 songs on Kazaa: penalty once again confirmed

New episode in the saga of the American judicial Joel Tenenbaum, whose sentence to a fine of $ 675,000 for downloading and sharing 30 songs on Kazaa has once again been confirmed.

In the mid-2000s, the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) went on a rather misguided witch-hunt, filing lawsuits against individual file-sharers seemingly at random, despite winning a combined nine-figure settlement from the main culprits: the peer-to-peer networks themselves, Napster and Kazaa.

Back in 2005, then-college student Joel Tenenbaum was busted for sharing 31 songs via Kazaa. In the seven years since, his case—one of only two of its kind to go to trial—has been decided and appealed countless times. Federal copyright law mandates a penalty in the range of $750 to $150,000 per infringement, so a jury  in 2009 somehow decided upon $22,500 per infringement, saddling Tenenbaum with a $675,000 fine. It was then reduced to a total fine of $67,500 by a district court judge. And then an appeals court overturned that decision, reinstating the $675,000 fine.

Finally, the case was due to be tried in front of the Supreme Court this month. Except it wasn’t—because they decided it wasn’t worth their time. So, the fine sticks. For 31 songs.

Google Goggles updated, works with non-autofocus cameras too

The Google Goggles has been updated: it now allows owners of a smartphone that does not have an autofocus use, which was not the case before. In the process, Google has introduced a new system to protect users from malicious links.

Google has been hard at work  updating its mobile applications as of late. Yesterday, the search giant updated its mobile browser Chrome for the iPhone, now it’s delivering an update to its Google Goggles application for Android devices. New Google Goggles features include support for devices that don’t have autofocus cameras, which is perfect for low-end smartphones.

Moreover, the application brings faster and better tracking of objects when in continuous mode, and the search-from-camera feature no longer needs to have Search History enabled for it to work. Goggles also improves its QR-scanning abilities, and will show a thumbnail if the QR code has an embedded URL, will scan URLs against known malicious links, and can read much more bar codes. Lastly, Google Goggles adds search results that appear similar to the subject if it can’t find an exact match.

Google Goggles version 1.9 adds support for devices without autofocusing optics, giving those on budget gear a chance to use the real world as a search box. Point it at a QR code containing a URL, and it'll show you a thumbnail of the page and check its credentials against its blacklist of malicious sites. If it comes up short when searching for a product, it'll even search for similar-looking items to help you find what you're looking for, and it's available from the Play store for free.

Kaspersky Lab’s New “Safe Money” Technology Protects Personal Data and Real Money

Kaspersky Internet Security Comes Loaded with Latest Technologies to Protect Personal Data and Real Money

It’s no secret: most cybercriminals don’t want online fame, they want your money. Kaspersky Lab research shows that each day, more than 1,400 new pieces of banking malware are created. These malicious programs are designed specifically to hijack your online purchases, snoop on credit card transactions, and redirect your web browser to fraudulent sites. More than $1.2 trillion will be exchanged over the Internet in 2012, and stealing even a small percentage can mean a big pay-day for cybercriminals.

Today, Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content and threat management solutions, announced new versions of Kaspersky Internet Security and Kaspersky Anti-Virus. Both products feature our strongest protection ever against modern threats and significant improvements to performance and simplicity, including a faster installation, less drain on computer resources and battery life, and real-time protection against viruses, spyware, and more.

A new offering found in Kaspersky Internet Security is Safe Money, Kaspersky Lab’s unique technology designed to protect the user’s money when shopping and banking online. To keep your cash safe, Kaspersky Internet Security’s Safe Money will:

1. Automatically activate when visiting most common payment services (PayPal, etc.), banking websites, and you can easily add your own bank or shopping websites to the list.

2. Isolate your payment operations in a special web browser to ensure your transactions aren’t monitored.

3. Verify the authenticity of the banking or payment website itself, to ensure the site isn’t compromised by malware, or a fake website designed to look authentic.

4. Evaluate the security status of your computer, and warn about any existing threats that should be addressed prior to making payments.

5. Provide an onscreen Virtual Keyboard when entering your credit card or payment information so you can enter your information with mouse-clicks. This will activate a special program to prevent malware from logging any keystrokes on your physical keyboard.

In July, this new Safe Money technology was evaluated against 15 real-world attack styles used by malware to steal your banking information. Tested by independent research lab Matousec, Kaspersky Internet Security successfully blocked all 15 banking attacks. Most other popular security products failed to block even half of the attacks. The full test results are available online.

Watching for Security Flaws in Your Apps and Programs

Another new and unique technology added to both Kaspersky Internet Security and Kaspersky Anti-Virus is called Automatic Exploit Prevention. An easy way for a cybercriminal to gain control of your PC is to take advantage of a security flaw in one of the dozens of programs and applications you use every day. When cybercriminals discover an unpatched security flaw in a popular program – such as Adobe Acrobat, Java or Microsoft Internet Explorer, for example – they may race to infect as many victims as they can before the vendor fixes the flaw. Whenever you ignore a pop-up window telling you to download the latest updates for a program, you’re unwittingly keeping this window of vulnerability open even longer. Now, Kaspersky Lab will not only alert you when out-of-date programs are running on your machine, but Automatic Exploit Prevention will protect you from these vulnerabilities until you are able to update them.

Kaspersky Lab’s technology watches over the programs installed on your PC and knows how these programs are supposed to act. If the program tries to perform unusual or unauthorized activities, Automatic Exploit Prevent blocks the abnormal action while still allowing the program to perform its normal operations. This means Kaspersky Internet Security and Kaspersky Anti-Virus will keep you safe without inconveniencing you by shutting off the applications you use every day. It happens more often than you think – from January through March 2012, Kaspersky Lab detected more than 1 million malicious programs designed to exploit vulnerabilities in commonly-used software.

Kaspersky Lab: 15 Years of Award-Winning Security for Your Computer

In 2012, Kaspersky Lab celebrated its 15th anniversary of security research and technological innovation. For years, Kaspersky Lab has steadily refined and improved its cornerstone products – Kaspersky Anti-Virus for essential protection needed to secure a PC, and Kaspersky Internet Security for advanced protection to confidently browse online. Both products work behind the scenes to deliver the fastest and most trusted virus and spyware protection in the world. Kaspersky Lab’s key improvements to both products, designed to protect customers in 2013 and beyond, include:

— A new antivirus engine with better detection rates for the entire scope of emerging cyber-threats

— New anti-phishing technology that features improved detection of imposter websites that try to steal passwords and other valuable data

— A simplified user interface that provides faster installation and easier day-to-day use of the product

— Improved performance, to keep you safe without slowing you down

— More efficient power consumption, to ensure you get the most battery life from your laptop

In addition, both Kaspersky Anti-Virus and Kaspersky Internet Security are Windows 8 Ready, and will work seamlessly on the new Microsoft operating system. The new versions of Kaspersky Internet Security and Kaspersky Anti-Virus are included in Kaspersky ONE, a Universal Security product that protects PCs, Macs, smartphones(1) and Android tablets using a single activation code. No matter what devices you use to get online, all you need is Kaspersky ONE.

Pricing and Availability

Kaspersky Internet Security and Kaspersky Anti-Virus are available for purchase now on Kaspersky Lab’s online store, and wherever quality software is sold in the U.S. and Canada. Current customers may upgrade free of charge from Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 and Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 to the new products for the remainder of their existing license period. A standard subscription – 3-user licenses for a 1-year period – is $79.95 for Kaspersky Internet Security and $59.95 for Kaspersky Anti-Virus.

Apple v. Samsung design patent : Apple awarded $1bn in damages from Samsung in US court

Apple and Samsung claiming that the other infringed certain patents, and with so many witnesses and expert testimonies, we expected at least some semblance of balance in the jury's final verdict, like in South Korea, where both Samsung and Apple devices were banned the other day.

The federal court jury in the patent infringement lawsuit between Apple and Samsung has presented its verdict after deliberating for just 21 hours and 37 minutes following the three week trial. This particular case started with Apple's lawsuit last April and now the jury's decision is that Samsung did infringe on Apple's '381 bounceback patent with all 21 of its products in question. For the '915 patent on pinch-and-zoom, the jury ruled all but three of the devices listed infringed, and more damningly, found that Samsung executives either knew or should have known their products infringed on the listed patents. The jury has also found against Samsung when it comes to Apple's contours on the back of the iPhone and its home screen GUI. The Galaxy Tab, was found not to have infringed upon Apple's iPad design patents. The bad news for Samsung continued however, as the jury decided that not only did it willfully infringe on five of the seven Apple patents, but also upheld their validity when it came to utility, design and trade dress.

Apple:
We are grateful to the jury for their service and for investing the time to listen to our story and we were thrilled to be able to finally tell it. The mountain of evidence presented during the trail showed that Samsung's copying went far deeper than even we knew. The lawsuits between Apple and Samsung were about much more than patents or money. They were about values. At Apple, we value originality and innovation and pour our lives into making the best products on earth. We make these products to delight our customers, not for our competitors to flagrantly copy. We applaud the court for finding Samsung's behavior willful and for sending a loud and clear message that stealing isn't right.
Samsung:
Today's verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple, but as a loss for the American consumer. It will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices. It is unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners, or technology that is being improved every day by Samsung and other companies. Consumers have the right to choices, and they know what they are buying when they purchase Samsung products. This is not the final word in this case or in battles being waged in courts and tribunals around the world, some of which have already rejected many of Apple's claims. Samsung will continue to innovate and offer choices for the consumer

HP outsources WebOS in its new subsidiary Gram

The mobile operating system WebOS felt very lonely since the abandonment of mobile HP last year. A spin-off called Gram is created to continue its development.

The development of WebOS, the mobile operating system from HP, no longer provided by the parent in the future.  The California company has divided its activities by creating an independent entity (spin-off) called Gram, according to a letter circulated internally and issued by Cnet.

"We're a different company that focuses on software, user experience, cloud, engineering and partnerships," writes Martin Risau, vice president of HP, stating that the mission of the team " remains the same. "  Presented as a strategic redeployment, for the moment in "stealth mode" until the company finishes its incubation period, this should provide a Gram-off activity faster, outside the constraints of the parent.

Having abandoned the production of its mobile devices in 2011 (which is why the company had bought Palm a year earlier to $ 1.2 billion), HP made its division vivoter WebOS. The company was first reorganized in internal engineers to place the WebOS and marketing team under the direction of strategic department.

In December 2011, rather than draw a line adventure WebOS, the U.S. had chosen to release its mobile operating system , so it can be exploited by the open source community, announcing want to "move toward a new generation of applications and devices. Twitter API Version 1.1 Brings More Regulation To Apps

Twitter announced that night the next version of its API, detailing its strategy for third-party services and especially its commitment to offer a consistent experience to all end users.

Once reserved for geeks, Twitter now has such an influence, particularly through the media, he is looking more than ever to gain control of its ecosystem, through the forthcoming version 1.1 of its API, which will limit the possibilities of some third party service.

Twitter is such that end users receive the latest news, such as thematic pages and Twitter Cards opened mid-June, which promote relations with partners, enhance the attractiveness and thus the reputation of the service, and entail thereby term income.

Discouraged customers alternative

The alternative traditional customers, such qu'Echofon Tweetbot or that are explicitly named, are no longer welcome, as they disperse users and delay the adoption of this type of functionality.  Twitter has therefore planned several measures to discourage them.

For starters, the company will substantially limit their interest by imposing what were until now only recommendations on features and terminology to be used, and hence limiting their potential for innovation and added value.  It also will reserve the right to transmit its requirements to the editors of Popular customers, that is to say to those who will soon reach 100 000 users or those who are already beyond and that will double the number of users.  Finally, the origins of Twitter clients built some devices are more difficult to update, they in turn will be subject to prior certification.

 More supported services
Many other third party services will however welcome: those proposing the analysis but no direct interaction with the timeline, such as Klout (phew!), and of course all those intended for professionals, more likely to generate income, including whether they allow you to publish tweets.

Applications will be supervised more closely, however, through conditions of access to the API more strict.  More than any of its functions will be accessible without authentication, in order to reduce misuse.  Most applications will also be reduced from 350 to 60 interactions per hour per function, with the exception of clients who will benefit in contrast to an enhancement to 720 calls / hour, one every 5 s.

Version 1.1 of the Twitter API will be published and implemented in the coming weeks.  Version 1.0 will then cease to function six months later.

Instagram 3.0 now available for Android and iOS

stagram 3.0" is a major update of the popular application for Android and IOS. It focuses on navigation through improvements but also a new feature: geotagging.

A photo card to the limited interest
The new version introduces therefore a "photo card" that displays the location where the photos were taken from a user at a time.  These cards are actually accessed from the profiles, it is not possible to display a map combining the photos of all subscriptions, or public display photos taken nearby.

Almost all photos are geotagged with a user, through GPS or default of Wi-Fi environment, users are encouraged to make public their locations on the first launch of this third version.  They can and will handle this aspect for their entire library or for each photo.

Redesigns and optimizations
Instagram 3.0 reviews the way the appearance of user profiles, instead of pages, pages hashtag and explore tab, which now display larger photos, larger buttons, and automatically load the photos below to scroll unlimited .  Page sending picture has also been modernized.

This new version finally brings, as usual, are lot of performance optimizations.

"Instagram 3.0" is now available on the App Store for the iPhone and the Google Store Play for Android smartphones.

It is interesting to note that this major update, the first since the application is published by Facebook , does not provide any functionality related to social network and it keeps going, then we may fear that approximation from fading on Instagram.

Facebook 'Deleted' Photos Finally Deleted!

As he had announced in February, Facebook revised its system for storing files on its platform: the objective was to ensure a more rapid disappearance of files in its cache. Now, the photos deleted by users disappear permanently after one month.

It is the site Ars Technica, which in 2009 had questioned the time to alleviation of photos on Facebook ... to discover, in February 2012 , that the social network had not yet completely erased snapshots deleted 3 years earlier by the user.  A finding that prompted Facebook to announce the arrival of a new backup system, more efficient.

Three and a half years later, Ars Technica completes its investigation and announced that Facebook has finally solved the problem. "By working on our policy and infrastructure, we have established a maximum period of 30 days (for deleting files) on our network of content distribution," said the social networking site. "As you know, the pictures no longer be shown to other Facebook users as they are removed by their owners. The 30-day period applies only to images cached on the servers. "Frederic Wolens, Facebook spokesman, said that in most cases, the pictures disappear within less than that given.

The news follows a lengthy investigation, and that sounds like a small victory for advocates of privacy.  Still, if the issue of storing images in the cache of Facebook seems settled, it is only a drop in the sea of information packets recorded by the social network when a user publishes or registered something on his wall.
