Google Apps : A new programming interface for Gmail

While Microsoft has just announced the news of the next Hotmail and again wishes to impose itself directly against Gmail, Google unveiled its part for a new programming interface for its Gmail webmail in the Google Apps offering.

Via the secondary options of Gmail Labs, it is possible to activate the preview of some types of documents. Users may view such a file directly from Gmail to Google Docs, a slideshow from Picasa or Flickr or a YouTube video. In future, media integration of third party sites should be even further.

The Google Enterprise team announced on their official blog: "From today, third-party developers can create gadgets and contextual distribution within Google Apps Marketplace. These gadgets can get information of community sites, professional services, web applications (...) and users can interact with the data directly from Gmail.

Remember that Google Apps Marketplace, unveiled in March, is a gallery of free and commercial web applications that you can choose to graft following hosted Google Apps Standard or Premier. We thus find Box.net, Aviary Trips or Zoho, but also professional services like Cloud Sherpas Sada Systems or ScheduleOnce. The question is whether these gadgets preview will be available in standard Gmail accounts later.
