Google wants to trademark "Glass"

In order to truly succeed in the market connected glasses, Google would drop the name "Glass", a generic name that already some problems.

After Apple or Facebook, Google does not hesitate to want to have a generic term. Connected to his glasses, the California firm had previously submitted the name "Google Glass". The UPSTO, the trademark office in the United States, however, objected on a second request: the name "Glass".




On the one hand, the USPTO explains that "Glass" - "glass" in French - is a generic and purely descriptive term. Moreover, this mark is likely to cause confusion with other previously deposited. The company "Write On Glass", publishing a widget for websites, for example, has stressed that Google may overshadow its activities.

The Wall Street Journal , which reported the case, said that Google opposed the decision by explaining that its connected glasses were widely publicized. The company sent the court a record of 1900 pages comprising a set of articles mentioning the term "Glass" in reference to his work. California firm also rejects the descriptive side of the word, his camera is made of plastic and titanium.

In the past other large companies have attempted to file a brand from a generic name. In 2010, Facebook has obtained, for example the term "Face". Community giant also owns the label "Book". For its part, Apple has failed to secure the term "App Store". Microsoft and Amazon were strongly opposed. His side Microsoft was forced to rename its online storage service SkyDrive, following a complaint from BSkyB in England on the term "sky".
