AIR 2.0: the great promises of Adobe

The company Adobe has unveiled the features of the second version of the AIR environment. A competitor to Microsoft Silverlight, Adobe AIR enables to develop rich Internet applications directly on the computer through a range of web technologies (XHTML, JavaScript, Flash, Flex).

Adobe AIR 2.0 should also raise more barriers between the computer and the Web by providing a programming interface for native processes. This should enable applications for AIR programmed to communicate with the local software. It can for example imagine it will be possible to interact with the local address book or calendar. This will require that the developer distributes its application form. Exe file for Windows or. Dmg for Mac. AIR should also support storage devices such as USB key or digital camera. Ideally the user should be able to upload photos to a memory from an application specifically designed for Flickr for example.

Directly from an AIR application it will be possible to open a document through the implementation of an open API. Adobe also announced the support of multicast for Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6. Finally, we note a new version of the WebKit engine, promises in terms of performance and memory consumption or further efforts in terms of accessibility, with such support JAWS to read the dialog boxes.

In June the company announced 200 million installations of the first version of the software. A first beta of AIR 2.0 is expected at the end of the year. The final version should be published early 2010.
