Facebook Changes Privacy Policy
Facebook outlined changes to its privacy policy on Thursday and asked for feedback from the social network's users.
According to Elliot Schrage, vice president of communications and public policy, Facebook, the primary goals of the new "Privacy policy" proposals is "transparency and readability."
The proposed policy allows Facebook users to change or delete their profile information at any time by going to their profile page and clicking "Edit My Profile." Information will be updated immediately. While users cannot delete their date of birth, they can use the setting on the info tab of their profile information page to hide all or part of it from other users.
If users want to stop using his/her account, they may deactivate it or delete it. When they deactivate an account, no user will be able to see it, but it will not be deleted. Profile information (friends, photos, interests, etc.) are saved in case someone later decide to reactivate his/her account. When users delete an account, it is permanently deleted.
Even after users remove information from their profile or delete their account, copies of that information may remain viewable elsewhere to the extent it has been shared with others, it was otherwise distributed pursuant to their privacy settings, or it was copied or stored by other users. However, their name will no longer be associated with that information on Facebook. (For example, if someone posts something to another user's profile, and then he/she delete his/her account, that post may remain, but be attributed to an "Anonymous Facebook User.")
Removed and deleted information may persist in backup copies for up to 90 days, but will not be available to others, according to the proposed Privacy Policy.
Facebook also has restructured the document ? providing key points and easy links to jump to the different sections. They have added sections further explaining Facebook's current practices and introducing a new concept around Facebook Ads.
In this revision, Facebook "is fulfilling their commitment to the Privacy Commissioner of Canada" to update our privacy policy to better describe a number of practices. Specifically, they have included sections that further explain the privacy setting users can choose to make their content viewable by everyone, the difference between deactivating and deleting their account and the process of memorializing an account once Facebook has received a report that the account holder is deceased.
Facebook also added that the information the web site provides to advertisers is "anonymized," meaning that it can't be traced back to a user as an individual in any way.
Facebook also explained how they might use information from other sites to improve the quality of their ads. This information allows advertisers to do what is commonly called "conversion tracking," which helps them measure the effectiveness of their ads and make them more relevant. Most advertisers already do this in other places on the web. Should Facebook provide this, "we'll continue to respect your privacy by not sharing your information with advertisers, and we'll anonymize any information we receive," Schrage explained.
You can read the proposed update in its entirety and post comments to the Facebook Site Governance Page before the comment period ends at 12:00 p.m. PST on November 5.
Last April, Facebook had launched a new system of governance for the Facebook site and had became the first company that invites users to both comment and vote on proposed changes to its governing policies.
Facebook awarded With $711 million in damages
In related news, a a San Jose, Calif. court awarded Facebook $711 million in damages against Sanford Wallace, one of the spammers who accessed people's accounts without their permission and sent phony Wall posts and messages.
"While we don't expect to receive the vast majority of the award, we hope that this will act as a continued deterrent against these criminals," said Sam O'Rourke from the Facebook legal team.
The judge referred Wallace to the U.S. Attorney's Office with a request that Wallace be prosecuted for criminal contempt, which means that in addition to the judgment, he now faces possible jail time.
"This is another important victory in our fight against spam. We will continue to pursue damages against other spammers," O'Rourke added.
Last March, a court in San Jose, California issued a temporary restraining order against three spammers?Sanford Wallace, Adam Arzoomanian and Scott Shaw. They broke the law by sending unwanted messages and wall posts to people on Facebook, which in the United States violates the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the California Anti-Phishing Act and the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act (CAN-SPAM).
This isn't the first time Facebook has gone to court to battle spam. Last November, the company had announced an $873 million judgment made against Adam Guerbuez and Atlantis Blue Capital for sending sleazy messages to people on Facebook. This was the largest judgment ever for an action brought under CAN-SPAM.

Google Social Search: search in your social network
Google Social Search is a new search service that Google is currently testing in its Labs. All users are invited to take part in this experiment, provided they have a Google account and search the web with the global version (U.S.) engine. In the left side panel, a dedicated social option is then visible.
As its name suggests, Google Social Search focuses on research in your social network. For example, Google says that a query for "restaurants" will appear in the results page comments made by your friends and contacts (public content). To show that these results must click on the link in Social options.
For more personalized result
Google believes that for some applications, details of your social network will be more relevant. No magic, Google knows your social network using as your main source Google profile. The social network is built and from contacts in conjunction with the profile like the next person on Twitter or FirendFeed. The Gmail chat contacts and subscriptions to feeds via Google Reader are also taken into account.
Last week, Google also announced the signing of a partnership with Twitter in the field of real-time search to include updates of tweets in the results. A partnership that is not associated with Googe Social Search service that Google has in the video below:

Download Highbrow 1.0.5 for Mac OS X
The developer, Keith Alperin, is also known for MercuryMover, a utility that lets Mac users move and resize windows on the screen employing only the keyboard.
With the release of Highbrow 1.0.5, Alperin has been able to restore missing icons in the "Ask Me..." web browser picker under Snow Leopard. Changes included in other recent updates made the icon size more consistent with other Menubar icons, and fixed a bug where switching from "Ask Me Which Browser to Use" to "Use the Most Recently Used Web Browser" would not always result in the most recently used browser being selected.
Highbrow supports English only. Requirements include a Mac running at least OS X 10.5 and just 2.5 MB of hard drive space. Both PowerPC and Intel processors are compatible.

Toshiba Launches Highly Sensitive CMOS Image Sensor with BSI
Toshiba Corporation announced the launch of a new CMOS image sensor that will bring 14.6 million pixels to digital still cameras and to mobile phones supporting video imaging. The sensor, the latest addition to Toshiba's "Dynastron™" line-up, is also the company's first to integrate the enhanced sensitivity offered by back-side illumination technology (BSI). Sampling of the new sensor will begin in December and mass production will follow from the third quarter of 2010 (July—September).
BSI brings new levels of responsiveness to CMOS imaging. Lenses are deployed on the rear of the sensor on the silicon substrate, not on the front, where wiring limits light absorption. This positioning boosts light sensitivity and absorption by 40% compared to existing Toshiba products, and allows formation of finer image pixels.
Toshiba has made full use of the advantages of BSI to realize image pixels with a pitch of 1.4 microns, and to pack 14.6 million of them into a 1/2.3-inch sensor that meets the high level imaging and processing requirement, and that will also bring a new level of image quality to mobile phones. Toshiba will use the new sensor to promote its full-scale entry to digital camera market, and will continue to develop BSI products as a mainstream technology.
The new sensor will be mass produced at Toshiba's Oita Operations, on industry leading 300mm wafer lines deploying 65nm process technology. Initial production will be at a volume of 500,000 sensors a month.
CMOS image sensors are a focus product of Toshiba's System LSI business. Until now, their main application has been in mobile phones, where Toshiba could leverage its high density integration and low power consumption technologies. With the introduction of BSI CMOS sensors, Toshiba will reinforce the sensor business by expanding application to include digital cameras.

Google expands availability of its free voice mail
Google Inc. wants to answer your mobile phone calls when you can't or just don't want to talk.
In its latest bid to become a bigger player in telecommunications, the Internet search leader is giving people a chance to send calls to their cell phones into a free voice mail service unveiled earlier this year. The new choice is being introduced Tuesday.
The voice mail feature is part of Google Voice, a fledging service striving to become a hub for phone calls to people's mobile, home and office numbers.
Taking advantage of all of its tools requires getting a new number from Google Voice, a leap that many people aren't ready to make.
So Google has come up with a way to tie existing mobile phone numbers to its voice mail service. The process requires a few steps outlined at http://www.google.com/voice.
"We see this as a perfect step for getting familiar with Google Voice without a lot of change," said Vincent Paquet, a senior product manager.
The caveat: People choosing to stick with their existing phone numbers won't be able to take advantage of all Google Voice features, such as directing calls to a home or office number.
But the voice mail option will provide more bells and whistles than what most major mobile phone carriers offer in their standard packages.
Among other things, Google's voice mail service automatically transcribes messages and lets users customize greetings for frequent callers.
As part of its expansion efforts, Google developed a voice application for theiPhone that didn't get approved by Apple Inc. The snub triggered a Federal Communications Commission inquiry into whether Apple and the iPhone 's U.S. carrier, AT&T Inc., might have been trying to stifle a potential competitor.

FOSTER CITY and LOS GATOS, Calif., October 26, 2009 – Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) and Netflix, Inc. [Nasdaq: NFLX] today announced that they are joining forces to make thousands of movies and TV episodes from Netflix available to be streamed instantly to TVs via the playstation 3 (PS3) computer entertainment system. Netflix expects to begin streaming via the PS3 system next month at no additional cost to Netflix members in the United States who have a PS3 system.
Today's announcement pairs two of the most popular and fastest growing home entertainment brands in the U.S. The PS3 system's installed base has reached close to 9 million units in the United States, and Netflix recently reported 11.1 million U.S. subscribers as of September 30.
The partnership further solidifies the PS3 system as the most complete home entertainment hub on the market today, enabling consumers to play high-definition games, watch Blu-ray movies, listen to music, view photos, browse the Internet, and download content from PlayStation Network − from exclusive games to blockbuster movies and popular TV shows. PS3 system owners will soon enjoy an unparalleled experience watching their favorite movies and TV shows streamed instantly from Netflix, downloading from the PlayStation Network or watching Blu-ray/DVD media. The Netflix offering expands on the entertainment experience delivered to PS3 system owners via PlayStation Network.
For only $8.99 a month, Netflix members can instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streamed to their TVs and computers via Netflix ready devices such as the PS3 system and can receive unlimited DVDs delivered quickly to their homes.
"The PlayStation 3 system has always been about more than just gaming, and it will soon be the only platform in the industry to offer consumers such a variety of convenient options for enjoying movies and TV shows," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "Whether you want to watch content on Blu-ray disc and DVD, download it from the PlayStation Network's video delivery service, or stream videos instantly from Netflix, the PS3 system is the only solution that offers it all."
"As instantly watching movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix becomes an increasingly popular way to enjoy the Netflix service, our goal is to rapidly expand the devices that stream to our members," said Netflix CEO and co-founder Reed Hastings. "As a leading game console and Blu-ray disc player, bringing Netflix to the PS3 system is a real win for both Netflix members and PS3 system owners."
Initially, watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members. The free instant streaming disc leverages Blu-ray's BD-Live™ technology to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system, which must be online via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Netflix members simply slide the disc into their PS3 systems to reveal movies and TV episodes that can be watched instantly. These titles are conveniently organized into a variety of categories based on members' personal preferences, popular genres, new arrivals and members' individual instant Queues. Members can use the Netflix Web site or navigate directly on their PS3 systems to add movies and TV shows to their Queues. With the PS3 system's Wireless Controller, members can choose a movie to watch from their instant Queues or just play directly from any of the lists. They also have the ability to read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they have the option of fast-forwarding and rewinding the video stream via the Wireless Controller.
Netflix members and PS3 system owners can now reserve a free instant streaming disc for PS3 systems by going to www.netflix.com/ps3. Upon availability, the instant streaming disc will be delivered for free by first-class mail, generally one business day after members request it.

Google Maps Improved
The Google Maps team rolled out last week a number of refinements to the look and feel of Google maps.
The changes are intended to keep the same information-rich map while making it easier to pick out the information that is most useful. The changes affect both the 'Map' and 'Hybrid' styles, and include numerous refinements to color, density, typography, and road styling worldwide. For example, in map view, local and arterial roads have been narrowed at medium zooms to improve legibility, and the overall colours have been optimized to be easier on the eye and conflict less with other things (such as traffic, transit lines and search results) that we overlay onto the map. Hybrid roads have gained a crisp outline to make them easier to follow, and the overall look is now closer to an augmented satellite view instead of a simple overlay.
In some areas the changes are obvious, while in others they are quite subtle.
