Ubuntu 10.04 LTS: first alpha version

The site is actually launched for the next LTS version of Ubuntu Linux distribution with the publication of a first alpha release of Lucid Lynx.

The cycle has left! Every six months, Canonical delivers a new version of the Linux distribution Ubuntu. After the version 9.10 of October 2009, the estate will be provided in April 2010 by a version 10.04 in the hour codenamed Lucid Lynx.

This version 10.04 is a little unusual, as labeled LTS Long Term Support. This happens every two years for Ubuntu with the initiation of maintenance for three years for the desktop version (one and a half without LTS) and five years for the server version, plus technical support provided by Canonical fee.

An LTS release should be particularly stable, so Canonical decided to move to the latest stable version of GNOME 2 (future version 2.30), thus making the impasse on version 3. This choice has anyway been "legitimized" by the development team of GNOME since GNOME 3.0 finally released in September 2010 and not in March.

SC KDE with Kubuntu LTS also 10/04, it will be the version 4.4 including a first beta has just been published. The final version of KDE SC 4.4 is expected for the month of February 2010. It seemed that Canonical would have turned to the latest stable version of KDE 4.3.

The first alpha release of Ubuntu 10.04 is based on the freshly released Linux kernel 2.6.32. The goal is to prepare the ground with a number of software updates to be tested, and a significant loss, that of HAL package for a start even faster. For Ubuntu 10.04, ambition is great at this level with an expected startup of about 10 seconds.
